i "hard wired" these two components because i
like a clean look, and a wad of accessory plugs hanging from the ashtray just ain't my thing. and maybe it'll help someone else.
as this is just a simple hidden accessory plug it should
work for most anything, ipods and such.
the mechanical or electrical complexly
of this,on a scale of 1-10 is about a minus 3!
tools:
7mm socket
flat head
black tape
zip tie's
1: 12V direct wire type accessory socket
1: 2 into 1 accessory socket's
wire stripers
this diag shows the wire i'll be spliceing into
this is the one that controls the radio staying
on for that 10-15 min after you've turned off the key
and will turn off these two accessorys along with the radio, when you open the door.(hook the pos+ to this wire--yellow)
pop the top of the face plate off
the bottom slids out
unscrew the 7mm screws holding the radio in.
unplug the antenna and harnness, and toss the radio
to the side, don't lose it you'll need it later....LOL
unscrew the armrest tray (screws on the bottom too)
pop out the light cover (the back cover will fall off)
this made it much easier to pull the tray out
(and clean up them nasty coffee spills while you're in there)
(reassembled for installment)
this is the type of "hard wire" socket, and dble pig tail i used
i broke off the cover to the hard wire socket
didn't see a need for it anymore.
with the gray clip side of the harnness faceing you
you'll see the yellow wire your going to tap into
it's the second one in from the right end,the negative
is the black one,on the opposite side of the same row of wires.
i used a pair of wire stripes, clamping on the harness
side applying just enough pressure to cut sheathing and push it a little, then did the same about 1/4 inch up
the wire, slit the sheathing. and that left me with an
intact wire,to tap into
or you could just lop it inhalf and use wire nuts
or them fancy splicing clips,i didn't have at the time.
your choice!
now plug in the spliter, and then the accessory's into that
you'll see i taped them to the plugs, that way their nice and secure and won't fall out
i taped and zip tyed it all together, then rapped them in cloth
to keep any rattles away.
in the back of the radio hole you'll find the "mule option"
plenty of room for a kilo, or in this case a bunch of wire's
this is it tucked into it's space.
GPS plug run in premade groove
radio back in
i didn't have to remove the top of the center console
to run the XM power lead, i just snaked a long zip tie
up to the wire, taped it to that and drew it back to
the arm rest hole
kind'a like this(i did a DIY for my 95 ninety eight)
you'll see i just slid the wire down the seam of the console
and the antenna snakes under the seat, bottom door panel,
and under the back seat.and out to the deck lid
i stow the base between the console and seat when not in use.
put your dash and armrest back together, and you're ready
to go! with a much cleaner look!
oh,things you should be aware of,all my accessory plugs have a built in buss type fuse(i think they all do now) and unlike my 95 ninety eight, my GPS starts in the computer mode, then fires up
normally.
also unlike my older ninety eight, if you pull the XM out of the base before you turn off the car and open the door the stock radio stays on, so take it out after you've opend the door.
BUT if the XM was never in the base, and you turn on and off the car and get out, the stock radio turns off normally.
and power is cut to the plugin's (i checked)
i guess it's a circuit change of direction thingy that requires returning to the starting point. go figure?
