I was underneath the front of my 2001 Aurora fixing the front mount (PITA ), and happen to begin my gaze at the two (LT, RT) grills in the lower bumper. I noticed that it in large restricted maximum flow to the AC Core/Radiator. So i decided to fix that... 1. So i took them out (via 1 philips screw) and made some measurements and marks on the back. 2. I then took a couple clamps, and took an old license plate (only thing i could fin with a sharp edge and rigid) and clamped the licence plate to the back of the 'grill'. I then made sure that the few plastic welds came loose holding the horizontal grill slats to the solid plastic backing. 3. I proceeded with a heat gun and slowly started to heat the back of the solid backing of the vent. 4. i then took a large vegetable knife (a tool i keep in the garage for gardening and select automotive jobs) and inserted it between the horizontal vents and the backing and used its precise edge to slowly fold the now malleable edge of the plastic backing. 5. I now have folded the back plastic back to a roughly 45-55 degree angle which will no angle and face towards the engine and direct more air directly to the coolant cores. Now i have ran the vent under cool water to solidify the bend. 6. Last but not least i picked up some Rust-Oleum Black Acrylic Lacquer and painted both vents prior to installing. It gave them a beautiful gloss shine! (also they have some aftermarket "inserts" online) I hope you liked my non-sense mods, see pics below !

I was thinking about doing something like that, in fact, I ran with the grills removed for a while to see how I liked it.
I got to thinking. Why did GM do that in the first place?
The only thing I could think of was for gas mileage.
Some of these newer cars go so far as to have shutters that close to block off the flow of air through the grill(s) to direct the flow around the car instead of through...
From an aerodynamic standpoint, there has to be a positive effect to only allowing sufficient flow for engine cooling.

its maximized for cooling and more aerodynamic imo
