Someone please help me.... For the past week every time i try to crank my car, it will not turn over. The check engine light is not on. I have to press the gas lightly before it will crank. After i get it in gear the car is fine. Anyone know what this could be?

Re: Difficult shifting from "park" found the fix! « Result #7 Today at 4:15pm »
As it turned out, the BTSI, (brake transmission shift interlock), solenoid was sticking. Nowhere in the service manual does it mention how to determine this could fail. At least I couldn't find it.
It's purpose is to prevent the shift from being moved from park until you press the brake pedal. The symptom I had was the shift button would not depress without GREAT force. I had to whack it pretty good.
How it works is after turning the key to the run position, 12 volts are applied to the solenoid to hold the shift in park until you depress the brake pedal which opens the circuit. It is located inside the console, has a two wire connector and a mechanical rod that attaches to the shift. A very simple mechanism. I lubed the shaft of the solenoid and the linkage and it is cured. I could have just left the plug off to deactivate it but it is a safety feature.
If you know how to disassemble the console, I've been into mine before, this is a ten minute job.
I doubt that temperature has any effect on this problem.

Last year when i was headed back to work from lunch i was behind a dodge 2500 at a stop light waiting to go over the bridge. the slope was about 35 degrees and the truck was a half car length from me. I was sitting there waiting when i noticed the truck rolling towards me i honked the guy next to me honked and BAME. long story short he drove off , i followed and called the cops, they stoped him and he was a 90 year old man that didnt know anything happened and my car was fine not a mark but the sound when he hit me made me think my car was messed up.
One week later im walking out of the movies with my friends and it was a late show so the parking lot was almost empty, as we walk i say a couple get into the car parked infront of mine, start it up, and back into my car and try to drive off. I jumped infront of the car so they couldnt leave the guy got out and we walked around to see what happened. the guy said did i do anything to it as we walked to look and i said you better hope not. I didnt get a good look at the guy before i said that but he was a big dude with a powerlifting shirt. So we looked at the cars and mine agian didnt have one mark on it.
Know almost a year later a ladie on my lil brother basketball team was in a hurry the other night, jumped in her nissan van and floored it in reverse and BAME, and again i have a idiot hit me and this was the hardest yet. I was 15-20 feet behind her in the parking lot with my lights on, when i saw what was going to happen i laid on the horn and she still didnt see me"you got to hate blondes" . ok so we both get out and look to see what happened and shes saying sorry the whole time and on my car i had a white powder that washed right off and her van had a split on the bumper where she hit the point on the fornt of our car's. i opened the hood and checked my car out said mines ok and she left. i know i should have got her info but i was happy with the out come and she lives down the street so i could still get it if i needed it.

What with modern technology such as direct injection & variable valve timing, among others, small & medium blocks can take up the slack left by the disappearance of the big block.

brake pedal to the floor « Result #19 Today at 2:14pm »
I've got a '95 that just recently is giving me brake problems. The pedal has been going to the floor. Complete brake job done 6 months ago so pads are good. Checked for leaks and all is clean. Reservoir stays full. The brake booster sounded unusually loud to me, so I put a new one in (what a job that was). Pedal still flows right to the floor, especially at a red light. After a long search here on the site, I was able to narrow it down to vacuum leak (motor is running great), master cylinder, anti-lock, or some valve. The only other symptoms I'm having is a weird electrical one in that lights dim/brighten or heater fan will quicken/slow depending on how much I step on the gas (vacuum?). I'm loving my 95, but it seems as though I've got it in the garage as often as my previous sh*tboxes. Anyone out there recommend what I should do next? Going to my brother's garage this weekend to repair the radiator (leaking badly) and would love to fix this at the same time. Thanks. a2bf
looking for parts, '99 4.0L « Result #22 Today at 1:34pm »
Hello all!
Just bought a '99 beauty with a blown head gasket and thought i'd see how many things i can dig up here before i try alternatives.
I'm looking for:
* A Northstar performance "Suregrip SG series stud kit" on the cheap! Something you bought but not used/needed, willing to re-sell at a discounted price
* Driver side master window control switch, mine has the drivers window control switch busted off (one of very few probs with this butte)
* Grey Leather drivers seat (maybe) as the previous owner was apparently a VERY big girl and kinda "left her mark" on the Aurora.
* Factory rear spoiler (if reasonable), any color, as i plan to have her re-painted once i get the few door dings and some light hail damage smoothed out.
Any help you guys can give me here would be greatly appreciated, and i look foreward to asking lots of tech questions of you all, as there is virtually NO refference mat'l on these mechanical marvels.
Re: replace head bolts with stud kit? « Result #23 Today at 1:14pm »
I've got to suggest going with the northstar performance stud kit over the ns300l inserts because of the fact that the studs are the only true long tem fix, as the inserts cannot be properly torqued more that once.
Studs, on the other hand, are designed for hard racing applications to be torn down and rebuilt frequently. Instead of trying to pull the block to the bolt head, studs allow you to tighten the head onto the block! And since the only thread that is reused is steel and not in contact with the relatively soft aluminum block, you can re-torque over and over.
And lets face it, parts are designed to fail, so its not impossible that you may need to replace another head gasket after another 100k miles or so, or re-work the heads (valves, etc.). The only logical long term solution is to repair this common problem with anticipation of needing to do this work again in the distant future.
And in response to using the APR stud kit with the insters: I would advise against it because of the cost, as well as the remote possibility of the studs slipping inside the block if you need to remove the head again.

Re: Am I Being Ripped Off? « Result #24 Today at 1:01pm »
Our cars have a valve that opens to prevent blowing a whole in the intake. I would be suspect of this.
The backfire valve can be replaced, although it generally requires removing the intake to get to it. Once the intake is out, the valve assembly unscrews a quarter of a turn and comes out.
The part number for the backfire valve is 3546341. Its about $30

Re: Classic Hard Starts in Cold Weather « Result #26 Today at 12:47pm »
Regardless of the level of the coolant, with the engine cold, everything should be in equilibrium. The ECT rading should be close to the ambient air temperature, even if there is no coolant in the engine, which is why they have you compare it to the IAT sensor for testing purposes.
If there was low coolant, this might affect the ECT reading as the car heats up, but it shouldn't have an effect on starting.
The scanner will make the process a whole lot easier though.
My radiator took the plunge on Thursday of last week. Driving to the mother in laws place and the Low Coolant Light came on. Pull in her house, it was leaking pretty bad. I refilled it and drove about 2 miles to an Autozone to get coolant and the light came on again.
Pulled in, and saw coolant squirting from underneath the car. Opened the hood and coolant was everywhere. Once it cooled down, I saw the lower radiator hose was just hanging there, not connected to the radiator. I thought to myself, "ok, get a new hose and top her off".... if only it was that easy...
Got it all topped off, took it down the road and within a minute, low coolant light came back... Getting aggervated...
Pulled into a Wal-Fart parking lot, and I saw a stream of coolant all the way down the parking to the street I turned off of. The radiator sides cracked from top to bottom. Great...
So 4 hours later, the tow truck came and took her home. Honestly I wasn't mad, just aggervated that I had both my babies with me and it took the tow truck company 4 hours.
So I found a Visteon Radiator for $225+ tax and it should be in in a couple days. Here is a pick of it in an Autozone parking lot.
I am somewhat concerned because I fear that the real problem I have been having is a bad headgasket. Compression test came out fine, the pressure test was good. The coolant thought stinks of gas but the test strips used to detect gas or oil in coolant came up negative. So I don't know anymore...

I think the hvac kinda just plugs in like the radio, since it was plugged in for 7 years things could be dirty. Plus thats why we use gold contacts...my guess it just needs pluged in a few times to get a good connection.
Heat not nearly as hot this year « Result #29 Today at 11:16am »
I used that darn leak seal in the summer, and this winter it takes a lot more time to get up to temp and doesn't seem as hot. It is working, just not nearly as efficient as it was last winter.
I am hoping it's sticky thermostat - easy to change, but I do hear fluid gargling from behind the dash which I'm hoping is not the heater core?
Any direction or experience in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Well, once more the weatherman was crying wolf. The forecast was for 12" to 18" here in the southeast corner of NYS. There's no more than 6" in my driveway. At least that's less work for me.

Oscillating Power / Lights « Result #34 Today at 10:27am »
I notice in the evening, all lights (including dash) oscillate up down - sort of brighter/dimmer back and forth. It doesn't seem to cause any ill-effects yet, but looks very odd - even for on-coming vehicles.
I thought it may have been the alternator, but it reads fine.
I'd rather not quote the article because it's more about the people who lost their jobs than about one of the more interesting engines GM has ever produced.
Back in 1986 or 87, the sales of the "new" Toronado(I call Grand Am Toronado era) was so poor, an Oldsmobile dealer in LA, gave away a free Yugo with a purchase of a Toronado (retailed for $25,000 at the time).

Hey Skex,
I hear what you are saying. That data came from GM documents at the time though. GM has a site that is for dealer ordering that is publicly accessible. The problem is they don't keep data up past about 2 model years. So I don't want to change the data I took from there, as it was what GM said was available.
It's possible that Polo Green was only available early in the model year, perhaps to use up quantity of paint, and that the sales documents did not list it as a color. It is not uncommon for color changes to happen during the model year, or even for equipment to become available or unavailable.
However, now it's noted that the PG color was not in the sales brochures or dealer sales binders. I don't know if any '03 PG's were ever made, I was just archiving the data GM had at the time.

power running boards? Are they really necessary? lol.
besides, I heard (at least on the Lincolns) that they always broke.
yeah the power running boards on my uncles 2006 navigator ultimates sound like they are gonna break each time they are operated. Make a loud bang sound now.
I don't see the purpose in that feature honestly, seems like a gimmick dreamed up by Chrysler. We have it in our 07 Pacifica. All it really seems to do is make you want to accelerate harder (and use more gas) so you can feel the "manual" shifts you are doing. It's not really any faster IMO.
I love the manual shift in my Cadillac STS-V. Much nicer than the wheel mounted unit in my previous 745i but not as nice as the manual shift in the CTS Loaner I had. Deff depends on the car thats for sure.

Aurora40,
There is one too many colors listed for the 2003 Model year for the Aurora. Polo Green was not offered for the 2003 Model year.
I have the original 2003 sales brochure as well as a big dealership-only 3-ring binder sales book that contains all the information and brochure-type data on all the Oldsmobile vehicles built for the 2003 model year. It even includes samples of real cloth and leather from the seats of each vehicle. The book was given to me by the salesman at the Oldsmobile dealer that I bought my car from after they stopped selling Oldsmobiles. I have many more unique Oldsmobile brochures and memorabilia that only the dealers had access to and was not distributed to the general public that he gave me.
I checked my books and Polo Green was not offered for 2003. Too bad though, because it is a beautiful color. I have seen it on an Aurora only one time and thought that it was a stunning color. The metallic flakes in the paint made the color look jewel-like. It did not seem to have been a color the dealers ordered many Auroras in.
Just wanted you to know so that you could adjust your chart of colors.
