2008 Buick Enclave At 150 MPH?! « Thread Started on Oct 24, 2009, 6:37pm »
The Grapevine, Texas PD caught someone whom they claim was doing 150 mph in a 2008 Enclave. I don't believe this......................................................................
Grapevine police stop SUV clocked at 150 mph
Speeds of 150 mph were clocked early Friday by Grapevine police as they tried to stop a sports utility vehicle on Texas 114, according to reports.
The driver of the 2008 Buick Enclave, Ismael Esparza, 37, of Southlake, was arrested for driving while intoxicated, said Lt. Todd Dearing, spokesman for Grapevine police.
An officer was sent at 2:18 a.m. to check on a report of an intoxicated driver on Texas 121, north of DFW Airport, Dearing said.
It was unclear if the Enclave was the same vehicle, but it passed the officer's patrol car at a very high speed, Dearing said.
The officer followed the vehicle as it continued west onto Texas 114, Dearing said.
The Enclave, he added, changed lanes without signals and then it was clocked going 150 mph in a 60 mph zone.
A Car and Driver Website lists the Enclave's top speed (governor limited) at 109 mph, but Dearing said he's sticking to the speed listed in the police report.
"Regardless, he was cooking well over the speed for that area," Dearing said.
Esparza did not pull over until he was in Southlake, Dearing said.
"It took us about six miles to catch up to him," Dearing said. "With lights and sirens going, it still (took) him awhile to figure out there was an officer behind him.
"When he was asked why he was going that fast, he apologized and said he just wanted to get home."
A test showed that Esparza's blood alcohol level was 0.207, Dearing said. He added that 0.08 is the level to be legally intoxicated.
Bond for Esparza was set at $1,000, Dearing said.
The lieutenant said Friday afternoon that Esparza was about to be released from jail, where TV news reporters and camera crews were lining up to interview him.
“The General is no longer a general. After stopping production of Oldsmobile, and now Pontiac, I’d say they’re now about a Lieutenant. And when they do away with Buick or file bankruptcy, which ever comes first, they’ll be reduced to a Private.” ........ http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/138979

Goes to show what a solid platform the Lambda series of SUVs is, to be changing lanes at those speeds. And what a sweetheart of a motor those new 3.6L V6's are to haul that full-size crossover to 150mph.
Lt. Todd must have been in a Charger. Crown Vic's only get to 130mph with the small rear axle, or 120mph with the performance gear.

Something doesn't add up; How can the runaway vehicule be clocked at 150, then caught up? The police could go 160? More likely the police HAD to go 150 to catch up. I'm very skeptical of a GM SUV (speed limiter, you know?) going that fast. Remember: If it was easy going 150, everybody could do it. (from the Hotrod magazine axiom, "If running 9's was easy, everybody could do it.)

Anyway, he was driving drunk. DUMB.
Agreed. I didn't want to throw the Lt. under the bus, but yea, there's really no way the Enclave was really going 150mph. Most likely it's just a case of someone flipping out when they saw a 'big-to-them' number (something over a 100). Or fudged a number that big, so it would generate press/he could play hero, since a drunk guy wouldn't remember exactly how fast he was going, it would only be the cops words (betting a bit of both).
While he can't get out of the DUI charge, he probably could get out of speeding (more so reckless driving) since yea, there's no way it was really 150mph. Have the lawyer ask GM for their top speed info, etc.
Just one of the things I've always wondered about. A cop sees you speeding, flying by cars on the left like no tomorrow, and he's on like a overpass or side street to the highway. You flew by so quick he couldn't shoot rader, etc. He then process to pull you over. By the time you start seeing lights in the mirror, you're already slowed down, so the cop can't use his car's speedo. So what can the cop really charge you with?

Former 1995 Aurora owner, will swap 1985 Buick Riveria for 1996-1999 Aurora (even trade) Toroman: Able to pass cars and trucks with a single press of the gas pedal !! Faster than EX-President Bill Clinton changes his mind!!!! More powerful than a sexual harassment law suit!

Impossible. The wind resistance for a vehicle that size would require more then 286 HP to get up to 150 MPH. On top of that it is too high off the ground to make any kind of turn if it could get to those speeds. The damned thing would just flip. This guy is going to get out of those charges if he hires a lawyer smart enough to challenge the speed report.

yeah the 150 MPH thing seems rather sketchy to me. I've seen some around my area and they are nice and they can probably boogey when they need too....but 150?? Highly skeptical

im guessing also the 150 mph is what the police were doing at one point to catch up... I know the charger interceptors (turbo charged) can do over 180.... Ive been in one doing 160 (w/friend that works for a local police dept, shhhh lol)...

a turbo charger? I ave had first hand experience under the hood of a polce intercepted charger. It is nothing more than an R/T with heavy duty oil cooler/pump and alternator. I've never seen or heard of a turbo charger cop car. And this one was even undercover.
