I have completed the physical installation of the Onstar FMV mirror. I was able to remove the Gentex mirror by cutting through the glue with a coping saw. I ran into one other snag.....the glue that came with the installation kit was the worst I have ever seen. It never dried after about 10 minutes. I had another NAPA rear view mirror glue kit on hand & used that. I still have to complete the wiring, but that's the easy part................................

I have found that patience and understanding is what it takes when working on these cars, after all they are ladies.

Gentlemen......I have been working on cars as either a pro or DIY since I was 14, and if I decide that I'm going to get a job done, it's going to get done!!!

I sure wish I could be there. And as for any more work, with my normally low energy level, it would take me a long time......

Is there a risk that the windshield crack? Would certainly do it if I tried. You are great good, Marc.

Dynamic1964......Thank you for the recognition of my abilities! And as for breaking the windshield, there was a good possibility of that happening....I was terrified about that. Just getting the mirror off the windshield held me up for about 2 weeks on this project. The shop manual said "pull the mirror up & off the mount with a quick jerk." After looking at the way the mirror is attached to the window mount, I could see that would be an excellent way of smashing the windshield. A tool designed to release the catch simply didn't work. And the adhesive stood up to 200* from a heat gun. I was afraid to use higher heat (500*) out of fear of cracking the glass. So I figured that my last hope was the coping saw. It took about 3/4 of an hour to cut through the glue. And there was no damage to the glass that way.

UPDATE: I have located all the wires I need. For the ignition & ground, I'm going to use the wiring for the Gentex mirror. For the battery connection, I ran a wire from the battery (not attached yet) to the windshield/headliner area. As soon as I get some more energy, I'm going to complete the wiring & register with Onstar.

Do you need an antenna on the rear window or is it built into the mirror? I myself have an Onstar antenna on my rear window.

No rear window antenna with this mirror. The rear window antenna is for the voice activated cell phone that came with the factory installed Onstar. The GPS antenna for the factory Onstar is located on the bottom of the rear window shelf inside the trunk. It looks sort of like a computer mouse. The GPS antenna for the Onstar FMV is included in the mirror mount.

UPDATE: I put in the microphone today (5 minutes). Tomorrow I'm going to connect the wiring & then register and calibrate the system.

UPDATE: Project completed. I wired it. I called directly to Onstar to register. The speaker in the mirror is good & loud!!! I had to turn the volume down.

Congrats on a job well done. I have been thinking of doing the Onstar thing myself, but I dont really want to get rid of my auto dimming rear view mirror.

I'm a little hesitant to put that in my aurora, if it would even work with OBD1. I doubt it actually. Where are the collision sensors? I've set off the onstar emergency on my Z06 before just by slamming the brakes hard from 150mph+. It said collision detected, connecting to onstar emergency lol.

I wondered about that myself. Not sure if it would even have sensors for crash response.

Beastboy1976........Thank you!
Dynamic1964.......Thank you!
Auroradude & Beastboy1976......It does have the crash sensor. What it does not have is door unlocking & engine diagnostics.

And another thing.......If anybody here wants to install the Onstar FMV mirror, watch out for the registration & calibration instructions that follow the installation instructions. The installation instructions are good, but the registration & calibration instructions are pure garbage. Pay no attention to them. To register, just press the blue Onstar button to be connected to an Onstar service rep & answer all their questions. The calibration instructions simply aren't necessary.

And something else of importance......if anybody here wants to DIY this, be sure to get an installation kit, which is separate from the mirror package. The installation kit has the instructions, which are not included in the mirror box.

Thanks for the info Marc. Im giving it serious consideration. I preach to my customers about the value of OnStar all the time, and it would be nice to have it myself.
