My center console is totally screwed up and I need to pull it out to repair it. I've tried removing it, but I just can't seem to get it. I'm pretty sure I've read that someone on here has done it, but I couldn't find any relevant threads using the search feature. Does anyone know how that bugger comes out? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

hey shawn,
You have to empty out the console storage under the armrest and remove the screws at the bottom and top.
remove the screws at the ashtray
remove the shifter (small "U" clip at the slit in the leather) and disconnect the wire to the "power" switch by popping the switch out first.
the rest is just clips but pull carefully so you don't crack the wood; quite often small drink spills can "glue" the thing in. i ran a bondo squeegy along the edges to loosen.
watch the wiring on the armrest storage area light and be sure to disconnect it first.
it may be advisable to re-wire portions of it prior to installation - or - er - is that what is "totally screwed up"? (re-wired mine twice)
you can also adjust the ashtray door to line up better if needed while the console is out. the dampener is threaded to adjust the stop point. 'can't really remember but i think you have to remove a clip or pin so you can thread one end of the dampener in or out as needed.

Thanks a million, TJM I'm going to tackle it tomorrow, as I already spent all of today working on my mother-in-law's stinkin' Mazda Protoge Hopefully, I can call upon you if I run into any trouble. Thanks again. -Shawn

Yeah love, put some pics up here during your disassebly and that will be a great addition to the stickied 95-99 Maintenance thread. Or we could start a new thread of topics regarding Interior maintenance too.

Sounds like a plan. BTW Scotty - When you call me "love", it kinda creeps me out J/K, man... I know how much of a PITA it can be to type TheLoveThatNever Dies. Thankfully, my actual user name is only TLTND, so that's all I have to type when I log-on to the site ;D

Hey, these are great instructions. I just did this to my console and the entire thing is out, the armrest, the sides, all that is left is the stick sticking out, it looks like the car is a crown Vic or sumthing cuz it has no center console at all...

As much as I like it, and I could easily get someone to get plaster mold or wutever and finish it so I wouldn't have to have the console, but I like it with the console better. The whole car is now back together and clean inside, going to a car wash now...

Perhaps related, is the shift indicator (Park, Reverse, neutral etc) supposed to light up at night. Mine doesn't and I'd suspected these positions would light up a bit at least. Maybe bulbs burnt out in that area??

Maybe bulbs burnt out in that area?? regards: Often in the classic the wiring is torn or broken. It is supposed to light up with one bulb, there. The wiring is a bit short, a design flaw, and often ends up broken. Easy fix as far as I've read.

Yeah, when I pulled my shifter out and tried to disconnect my Power Transmission wire, it came clean undone so I had to splice it back together. I realized that after I got the whole dash together and my seats in and the car washed, i forgot to put in the bulb for the shift indicator, the orange thing, so I can't see what gear I am in at night, Do'h! I gotta fix that!

My gear selector light has never worked, I'm sure due to broken wiring as stated above. This revived thread has re-inspired me, so maybe I'll get my console apart and check it out soon. Thread stickied also.

The thing about mine is I kinda forced the bulb out, so I broke the housing (not the whole thing, just the little arm that hookes up into the moving shifter plate, so the bulb is still lit but it is just hangin in the center console somewhere under the shifter... Still haven't fixed that!

Thats what happened to mine, the best thing to do is just totally replace it (the whole console that is)

Sha right... Well, maybe just the wood and cup holder (not that I use it, it is un-usable. But all I really have to do is just replace that certain wire harness that doesn't have the broken plastic piece (I broke it on the bulb side, not the panel side.

Hey,
You might try this to get it out. Drill a 3/4 inch hole perpendicular through the console. Thread a 3/8" cable through it. Tie the other end to any 4x4 truck you may have and just give it a pull at 20 MPH. If you could get video, then others could be able to replicate your experience. Good luck, keep us posted on your work. I saw this done on the Red/Green show. Re-install took a bit of duct tape though.

I was able to get the Woodgrain piece off the console w/o cracking it. That was the only bad thing on my console. I went to the junk yard and swapped them out. It might have helped it being so hot the last couple weeks. Might have made the glue weak?... Don't know...

Man, good to see this thread back up. I'm going to do a picture and video write up on how to take the dash out and put it back in. I need to take it apart soon cuz my Shifter light still needs to be put back up (I bet the bulb is burned out by now. And I want to see about doing a light mod in my car, along with getting a new shifter plate, wood grain, and plastic piece over the gear numbers.
It's gonna be a while though, the weather is starting to turn, heck, I might be able to do it this Saturday, as I have the whole day off... maybe.

Please tell me you don't have to remove the center console to replace the PRNDL bulb. What is the procedure for replacing it?

If you're comfortable with reaching into the unknown, then all you'd need to technically remove is the console bin. But chances are that the wiring is probably broke for the PRND21 bulb. In which case, you'd only have to remove the radio bezel, shift knob, console bin and the cupholder/wood panel. You can rewire/change the bulb after you get it popped up.

First remove radio bezel. Remove your stuff from console, six screws in the box, two in the ashtray area. Remove the switch and light. I already had it out but the red circles are where the screws were at. Put car into first gear, look in front of the shifter. Pull the clip out with a screwdriver. Pull shifter off very carefully, do not pull the wire out. Mine was already broke off. The shifter light wire and power button wire both move with the shifter. Your power wire could be broke off without you even knowing. I couldn't find where my wire was connected. It goes into the harness but it was broke off flush. I recommend you cut the wrap and give these wires a little more travel. I also had to rewire my shifter light. There are four clips holding the rest of it on. They are circled in this picture. It helps to have your shifter in third or drive. Reach down under the cupholders and carefully push up. It should pop out pretty easy. Unhook the wires and you should have it out. Keep track of these clips. The one on the bottom left stayed in there when I pulled mine out. I thought I lost it. This is what it looks like out so you know what you are working with. I know it isn't quite complete I just thought the photos would help. Hope this helps some people out
