Without going through 7 pages to see if someone said this already, it most certainly does NOT drop over the engine to put out a fire. As a matter of pure fact, the hood insulation is extremely flammable and will do nothing but accelerate the fire, not much else under the hood is flammable. However, it is there to protect the paint on the hood. Removing it will mean your hood is now unprotected from the constant 200+ degree engine heat. It is also a sound deadening material, though not extremely effective. I highly suggest that if you remove the insulation that you also remove the weather stripping in order to help reduce the heat build up and save your paint.

Yeah. Mine is back on. Not worth it to me. To those who don't have one keep us posted.

No paint damage on my car whatsoever, and it has been a couple years I believe.

If you think about it, that insulation is not going to reduce the hoods temperature, if it does at all, I am sure it's a very minor difference, like 1/2 a degree. Even the paint under my hood has no problems. Paint can withstand somewhat high temperatures.

Yeah, my '99 was like that, black in color, but grey in the center under the insulation. Either lazy or trying to save a little paint.

my 97 has it painted under the insulation and never had any problems with the paint in the hood with it off.

Mine is painted underneath too, thankfully. No problems at all, as I mentioned before.

ever since ive removed my hood blanket, my engine temps have decreased by 200 degrees! This mod works best when the engine is off.

I think the blanket being there to help put out engine bay fires is a gimmick started by salesmen trying to pitch safety features. I will take both the blanket and engine cover off this spring to help with engine temps. My car needs painting anyway so i don't care about the hood paint peeling. I do care about the engine running hotter than it has to. Good info and some laughs here too (Randy's hood struts lol) Thanks.
