I have a 2001 Olds Aurora 3.5L with 109k miles. Just today, the DIC displayed "Theft System Fault" I cannot find any problems and the doors all lock and the alarm still functions.
What could cause this? The lights stays on all the time now.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I can stop by there tomorrow. Could it be cause by a bad/old key? I heard they have chips in them that get worn out...

That's one possible cause.

Mine did it a couple times a year or two ago. Hasnt happened since. I think its a glitch in the system if something else is having a problem, at least thats what I remember thinking about it. The bcm, door switchs and gear shifts all have ties to the door locks and therfor security, I did have a bad driver door master switch for awhile.

Ugh! I took the car to the dealership to get it diagnosed and now it wont START! I believe the computer disabled the fuel and ignition! What could the problem be??? They should have it diagnosed and fixed within the next few days................

According to the 2001 shop manual, pg. 8-679, the PCM or the VTD (Vehicle Theft Deterrent) module could be bad.

Could be a bad PCM. These can be had for pretty cheap at the junkyard and are very easy to switch out. You need to follow a specific procedure to get it to accept the chip in your key. It takes 30 minutes and I believe I posted it a few months back. As I recall, you turn the key on, then off for 10 minutes, then on again, then off for 10 minutes, then on, then off again for 10 more minutes and then it should accept the key.

I bet you only one of those parts are bad and that the scan the dealer did simply isn't capable of separating the functionality.

I second that motion. Any way they can get more money. Anyways, I got the car back yesterday and it is back in full gear. The ignition key slot feels tighter and there is less play in it. Maybe this could be something a perspective buyer should take note on.....

It's called the "shotgun method" of troubleshooting. Replaced anything that could be remotely associated with the problem and you're bound to fix it along the way.

Guess what! I took the Olds home yesterday and parked it, of course while driving it during the day. I let it sit for a night and just drove it and NOW the lights on the dash are out, the HVAC lights are out and two buttons on the stereo are out!!!!! I hit the dash a couple of times and the a few lights on the cluster came back to life, but the rest are gone. Did they not put it back together correctly? The lights were working perfectly before, UGH!!!!

I would take it to the same dealer, talk to the same mechanic that worked on your car, and show him the problem. Even if he doesn't think he caused it they will still look at it if they are a decent dealer at all. It's quite possible that they just didn't connect something properly. It sounds like they had to take a good portion of the dash out to diagnose and fix the original problem with your ignition/TCM.

The theft module on the 2g is behind the radio trim bezel. To replace the ignition cylinder you have to remove the radio and the hvac controls.
I definitely think they screwed something up. Since some of these are what you have listed as not functioning.

I think the hvac kinda just plugs in like the radio, since it was plugged in for 7 years things could be dirty. Plus thats why we use gold contacts...my guess it just needs pluged in a few times to get a good connection.

Dealer says its not their fault. What a crock. Got the car back and the lights are flickering again. Some of the dash lights came back to life. The HVAC lights are out on one side. Could I clean the contacts??? It worked PERFECTLY before they messed with it.

You could try to clean, I have to agree with them though. Its not their fault they touched an old connection and now it wants to be flakey. Brake cleaner sometimes is enough for cleaning electrical contacts, sometimes its best to use the real elec. contact cleaner.

Try in unhooking the battery for at least 30 minutes.

I am having theft system fault as well...tho it also will occasionally bring up airbag problem and brake light to flash. ALso my power accessories seem very low on juice and non of the gauges minus temp and speed work(non on dic). Only happens at night and only when the lights are on. If I turn lights to off it usually resets itself and everything works as it should again. I also drive during the day with lights on auto with no problems even if i turn them on(not auto) during day no problems. No Idea whats going on. codes were P0410, P0442, P1599, and some U codes 1040, 1064, 1065, 1096, 1016, 1255. I do have the AC bypassed and have for some time now. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. THanks

p0410 -Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction- Most likely need need Air pump. P0442- code means that the control module has detected a small leak - Most likley need new Gas cap P1599 - Engine Stall or Near Stall Detected- issue with power or issue with Crank positioning sensors. U1040 can also cause stalling by affecting the PCM, U1040 is a serial communication which looses power during current ignition cycle,The module that can communicate will set a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) which indicates that module cannot communicate.Check the charging system and battery connection, plus the connection going to the IP (fuse/relay) box connection. The rest U codes 1064, 1065, 1096, 1016, 1255
except first 2 codes you might have issue with power like bad battery or alternator bad ground somewhere.

Just had this problem on my 2001 4.0. Serv system and Theft system in the DIC, all the dash lights were on, Security, Trac Off, ABS, Batt. The A/C would start blowing hot air. Sometimes the car would start sometimes not. Battery was fully charged (even took it out and brought to Advanced Auto for them to check it, a-ok) Touched the Pos and Neg batt cables together to neutralize the system.
Shop scanned and got a huge list of codes, to numerous to even start listing but anyways... Turned out to be a bad ground cable from the engine block to the chassis.
Seems to be working OK now but I found a lone bolt in my driveway. Jacked up the Aurora, my Chevy pick up and my wife's Mazda3 could not find anything missing from anyplace visible. I'm hoping that it was from the ground cable that the tech dropped it and just replaced with a new bolt. wish me luck.
