I have a 2001 3.5 that the heat gage suddenly only goes to1/4 mark. Am planning to change thermostat. Which one do I buy,I see one with the thermostat & gasket only ($22.00)but some say I need the whole component ($50.00) also is the thermostat located on passenger side by the fan? Thanks

you can't miss the thermo follow the upper rad hose. bring extra coolant as you may need it.
buy the thermo with the gasket and thermo however if you can afford to buy the whole thing but its not 100% needed just make sure the cheaper one is higher quality ( the one with the whole thing is high end quality garunteed )

Thanks I purchased and installed the AC Delco unit. No regrets. It is located on the passenger side of the engine, above the alternator.

Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining Procedure
Caution As long as there is pressure in the cooling system, the temperature can be considerably higher than the boiling temperature of the solution in the radiator without causing the solution to boil. Removal of the pressure cap while the engine is hot and pressure is high will cause the solution to boil instantaneously -- possibly with explosive force -- spewing the solution over the engine, fenders and the person removing the cap.
Caution An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.
Remove the surge tank pressure cap. Clean the cap. Pressure test the cap. If necessary, replace the cap. Clean the surge tank filler neck. Inspect the filler neck. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Air Deflector Replacement - Front in Body Front End.
Open the radiator drain at the bottom of the radiator. Completely drain the cooling system. If the coolant is dirty, or if there are deposits in the radiator, flush the cooling system before refilling. Refer to Flushing . Remove the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement . Clean the outside of the surge tank. Pour out any fluid. Thoroughly clean the inside of the surge tank using soap and water. Thoroughly flush the surge tank with clean water and drain. Install the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement . Close the radiator drain. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Air Deflector Replacement - Front in Body Front End. Filling Procedure
Notice Do not add cold water to the cooling system with the engine at or above operating temperature. Adding cold water causes rapid cooling, resulting in possible engine damage.
NOTICE When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL® or HAVOLINE® DEX-COOL® is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
Notice Do not use a solution stronger than 70 percent antifreeze. Pure antifreeze can freeze at -22°C (-8°F).
Notice DO NOT use cooling system seal tabs, or similar compounds, unless otherwise instructed. The use of cooling system seal tabs, or similar compounds, may restrict coolant flow through the passages of the cooling system or the engine components. Restricted coolant flow may cause engine overheating and/or damage to the cooling system or the engine components/assembly.
Refill the cooling system. In order to ensure sufficient engine cooling, freezing and corrosion protection, maintain the protection level at -37°C (-34°F) or lower. Start the engine. Place the heater and A/C control in any A/C mode except Max and the temperature in the highest setting. Allow the engine to continue idling until the lower radiator to water pump hose is hot. Turn OFF the engine.
Allow the engine to cool to outside temperature. Ensure the coolant level in the surge tank is at the proper level (1).

I just finished going through this as part of replacing the crossover seals. Couple of things I wanted to share and a question. First, if you are replacing the thermostat housing, buy the AC Delco unit. I picked up a Stant and it was the wrong one. Both Stant and Gates list theirs as fitting both the Intrigue and the Aurora with the 3.5. Unfortunately, the Intrigue thermostat is slightly different than the Aurora. The Intrigue has two outlet tubes parallel to the block where the Aurora has only one perpendicular to the block. I've only been able to confirm that AC has the correct version. The AC # is 15-10571. Also check the metal tube that runs from the thermostat to the heater core. Mine was pretty rusty. I went to pull it out to clean it up/repaint and it fell apart in my hand. I was pretty surprised that it never blew out going down the highway. You can get that at any GM dealer. Took one day to get. It was around $30 for the tube.
Now the question. I've drained and refilled my cooling system before but this time I ended up having a problem that has me a little stumped. After refilling I have a thumping noise when it idles after warm-up. I've narrowed it down to the heater core outlet hose to the rear of the block. It pulses and moves around slightly. There seems to be an air pocket in it that has not passed through the system. I've put almost 75 mi on it since I finished the repairs and have topped of the system several times. I may have to pull the hose at the block when it cools off and try to purge the air that way. Just looking to see if anyone else has encountered this.
