Well, here is a new (to me) concept. For those of you who have not heard of Zipcar, it is basically a car share program. Only you pay per hour, and that 7-20 bucks covers the gas you use, the insurance, etc..etc.. No more car repair bills, gas bills, nothing! Plus they have a rather large selection of vehicles to choose from, and depending on the city you live in, you could find one right around the corner. Apparently up here in Chicago, and naperville, it is a pretty popular thing. Here is a link to the website: www.zipcar.comI guess more and more universities are participating in this, and even offering discounts for college students to use this program. Plus, with a 75 dollar sign on bonus, it might be worth trying out. Even if you do have to pay the annual fee up-front. ($25) I really have no intent on replacing any of my cars with a pay-as-you-go car plan, but I find it interesting that for a few bucks, I can climb behind the wheel of a BMW for a date, or evening out. And not worry about anything when I return it. Not even gas. It is indeed an interesting concept. Now: Discuss! ;D *Edit* I did not realize that this thread sounds more like an endorsement. I have NOT utilized this program. I do not endorse or otherwise imply that this companies products are being advertised by myself, or ACNA.

Not sure I'd want to sit in the backseat of a car rented by the hour!
Zipcar has been around for at least 10 years, fyi.

My friend lives in downtown Chicago uses this all the time to visit us in the burbs. He loves it and it is much cheaper than owning a vehicle and trying to pay and find parking in Chicago.

Well, considering that their inventory consists of cars that have been made within the past two years, I doubt any wheels will be falling off. Plus when I called zip-car, I asked a few questions about maintenance on their vehicles. Each week their vehicle is brought in for cleaning, and any/all mechanical maintenance that is due. Not sure I'd want to sit in the backseat of a car rented by the hour! Zipcar has been around for at least 10 years, fyi. Haha! I never thought about it in that perspective! I know they have been around for a while, I just hadn't heard of it till literally last night. Like Andy pointed out, if you live in a big city, the necessity of car ownership is reduced drastically. You have so many public means of transportation, that it would almost be an un-called for expense. BUT for people who need a car, just a few times a week/month, this seems like a rather good idea. I know we are a forum of car people, and we would likely NEVER give up owning a car. But I think alot of us can admit, that the idea seems rather nice.

There are certainly some places where it makes sense, because car ownership is very difficult/expensive. But in those places, other things also make the most sense, like public transportation, etc. There's a niche for things like Zipcar, but I doubt it will ever grow out of that niche. Which may be why you've never heard of it until now.

I've known about Zipcar for some time now. But I much prefer Enterprise or Avis over them.
