I occasionally get a burning smell inside my car. Not sure what it is, has anyone else encountered this with a 2002 V6.

Probably oil
Edit: sorry about the ignorant answer. I meant. It probably is engine oil. Like the other poster said valve cover gaskets. You can look at them and tell there leaking. Oil build up will be around the valve covers. Start there, it's the easiest.

Valve covers look like this when they leak. Exactly why I'm changing mine now.

Got quite a bit of smoke coming from front and rear of motor either valve or oil pan gasket (looks like theres an upper gasket above the oil pan gasket) dont care it leaks but its leaking on to the exhaust and smokeing alot! Well looks like ill be dumping more money in it for gaskets hope thats the cause.

A lot of smoke means a lot of oil, how much are you losing? Right above oil pan gasket is oil distribution manifold(#422). Half-case seal can also leak.

Damn! The diagram def helps. Yeah 01 4.0. Well the pan was leaking definitely, tightened the bolts and it stopped up front. I did a motor swap a month ago... shouldve replaced them then.. so much for saving money. Dipstick shows 1/4 to 1/2 qt low. I cleaned the bottom of the motor and just running for a little bit you can see residual oil under the pan. Looks like if I take that intermediate exhaust pipe off I can get to all the bolts without pulling it. I ******* hope so anyway.

Ive been looking around for another way besides cutting the pipe, i guess either way will require work,I think im going to go about it by supporting the motor and lowering the cradle to get that pan out. My luck ill cut the pipe and still wont be able to. Well report back. Or get a gas can and a match.

If you're up to try it, what about high mileage oil? There were/are a few ppl here running Maxlife 10w-30 with good results.

I have a similar problem. There is a faint burning odor I can smell coming through the vents when stopped. Had both valve cover gaskets replaced a while back. Total waste of money. Uusually have to add a quart around 1k miles. Odd thing is it never leaves a puddle of oil when parked.

Yeah I wasnt really getting a puddle either. That litle black metal bracket that bolts trans to motor underneath the exhaust crossover pipe on the bottom side of the motor collects it all and it gets burned off. I took off that bracket and it makes it to the ground

It definitely looks like the pan. Everything is clean above it, I cleaned the pan, let it run for a while and its seeping no higher then the gasket. Im assuming the last person tried to tighten them again to slow the leak because I went to and without much torque snapped a bolt. Got a new gasket but I guess ill be getting bolts from gm for 3.99 a pop (x13). I dont know if thee aee special design for the pan but with all this work im not going to risk it.
