I recently replaced my crankshaft position sensor, after having my CEL diagnosed with that code. After replacing the sensor with a brand new one from Autozone, the symptoms of the bad sensor are still present -- delayed start, tach reading 4k at idle and 8k when driving, car randomly dying.
Does anybody have any idea why this is? Do I need to go to a GM dealer for a relearn?
Thank you in advance

The relearn has to be done with a Tech 2. A shop other than the dealer might charge less for this.

Is the relearn 100% necessary to make the symptoms disappear?

There have been people here with 4.0s that got by without the relearn procedure.......the 4.0 has 2 CKPS. That might make a difference. But if your 3.5 is still running as if it had a bad CKPS, then I would say that the relearn is necessary.

Darn. I was afraid you'd say that.
I ran a code scanner and it popped a P0335 even with the brand new crankshaft sensor. Still think that's from a lack of relearn?

Check your wiring and connecter for damage/wear.

Connector and wiring seemed fine. No crimped/melted/stripped wires coming off the connector.
Could a bad camshaft sensor be the problem? I just replaced the camshaft position sensor with one from a junkyard. The Crankshaft Position Sensor code is the only one that pops though.

When it comes to those codes its always best to replace in pairs as one may be lieing to the other sending the wrong code to pop up now your junkyard one may be bad as well

maybe its a bad starter

I don't think that the camshaft position sensor would have anything to do with this. The CKPS & the CPS are on different circuits.

They are but they both run and do very similar things

I know both codes = bad starter, but the starter works just fine.
I rescanned for codes, only got the crankshaft position sensor (P0335)
I can't think of anything. I need to figure it out, because I use the car on a daily basis.
--UPDATE-- Changed the camshaft position sensor. The car used to crank for 7 seconds or so, then kick over and start, then the tach would hit 4k at idle. The tach hits 8k immediately now. That's the only change I've noticed so far with the new sensor.
Am I pretty much bottlenecked down to going and getting a relearn? I don't want to spend the money on it and have it not work.

Check wiring near the exhuast crossover. Ihave found damaged wiring near there before

I guess I'll go through and look at wiring. Seems strange that there might be a wiring issue when the car only has 63k miles on it.

Update: Rescanned after fiddling around with different sensors. Same P0335 code, but on this scanner, it comes up with CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR A - CIRCUIT
I'm assuming since I've put 3 new sensors in the car and it had the same problems, the sensor itself isn't the issue. The "CIRCUIT" part of the scan makes me wonder if this is indeed a connection problem. Is this a fairly common thing, having the connector go bad?
Thanks, everyone.

From 2002 FSM, but likely accurate. Hope it helps.

oldwino, that picture is INCREDIBLY helpful. Thank you so much!
Off to Ricerzone to see if they have a 6-pin connector for the CKPS.

you're welcome. If they don't have it, RockAuto will.

Update!! Checked all the wiring, spliced in a new connector, and still NO CHANGE. I'm tearing my hair out with this car. I also just put a new new new crankshaft position sensor in. Helped with the stalling, but the car still has long, rough crank times. Tach still reads an idle of 4k, and shoots to 8k when I step on the gas. The CEL and P0335 code are still popping. Does anybody have ANY idea what to do?? Please help. I love this car to death, but I can't keep dumping money into it if it's going to keep doing this. Thanks in advance.
