AC compressor pulley bearing has decided it would like to make noise. I know that some of you 2G guys have replaced the pulley bearing on your compressors. I am not aware of any Classic owners doing so. I looked on rockauto and they do indeed carry replacements. Will likely go with the SKF bearing. The AC Compressor itself is fine and system blows cold. So I'm not sure if I can get this done on the car or not without opening the system. Does anyone have tips/advice for this repair? I have not had the pleasure of doing one. Always had the compressor take a dump. Thanks! - Sall

Get it quick, when it starts making noise its on its last leg, speaking from experience haha. If I remember right the bearing had to be done on a bench (i/e compressor needs to be removed anyways) according to my FSM, but I could be mistaken. I just slapped on a compressor each time, figured may as well since I'm doing all the work anyways.

I'm not convinced it can't be done without removing from the car. I can see I need this tool Robinair 41067... www.sjdiscounttools.com/rob41067.htmland a puller I already have. Not sure if the clutch plate remover installer is available to rent locally or not yet. I certainly won't be spending money on a new compressor and all the trimmings if not necessary. I already pulled the belt off and she is parked in the garage for a bit longer. Long winter wait for every day driving.

Was trying to remember if there'd be enough room to do it on the car, looks like it judging from a picture I had of the job

Right. I am hoping so. I guess I will find out. O'Reilly's tells me they have the tool for rent. Checking parts houses for bearing tomorrow.

Found the SKF bearing on eBay for $18 shipped. National and Driveworks were only available locally.
Hopefully I will get the pulley/bearing off this weekend if the rental tool works. Decide whether I will press old one out or have someone with hydraulic press do it quickly for me.
Will try to get some pictures if all goes well.

I'd like to see how its done because I was confused looking at it when I thought about it haha. Here is the procedure on a V5 compressor which uses very similar clutch plate/pulley. Good video. Going to start on it today and get the first mow of the year in! I don't have the new bearing yet but at least will hve it out ready for it.

I went to one of each of the local auto stores that rent tools(O'Reill's, AutoZone & Advance Auto). All had a tool similar to the one that needs be used but they all had a pointed tip. The FSM specifically states:
I could rig something up to work likely but not risking losing a $100+ tool deposit for an entire kit. So, I found the correct tool on eBay for $20 shipped. Project on hold for a few more days.

Hmm that one looks exactly like my replacement compressor haha. After watching that I'm almost glad I just replaced the compressor haha (well I had metal shavings in my orifice tube too) looks like a PITA haha.

I think there is updated clutch plate so it's possible! It doesn't look too bad! Just using two pullers and replacing a bearing. Saving a couple hundred bucks in the process if all goes well. It sounds like yours was seized though or internals failing. Mine seems to have just reared it's head and retired it as soon as noticed it. An AC bypass belt is only $15 though if I felt the need to drive it right now. All the parts should be here by Tuesday so I can wait

Would this be related to a compressor making like a rattle/chatter noise when it turns on? Mine just began to on a classic.

Would this be related to a compressor making like a rattle/chatter noise when it turns on? Mine just began to on a classic. Each time the compressor engages? This project has been pretty straight forward so far. I dropped the pulley and new bearing off this morning to have the old pressed out and the new pressed in. Will pick it up tomorrow. The clutch was getting pretty warn. So I ordered a new one for $22 shipped(a steal!). If the compressor itself holds out for another 50-75k I will be happy! Will post some pictures later when I upload them.
