Okay yesterday when I was driving my car I noticed hard shifts, it was not wanting to shift up gear until 2000 rpms or I lift my foot off the gas pedal. The only engine code my car has currently is a P0410 Secondary air injection. It's a 2001 olds aurora with 102,000 miles 3.5L auto. I just replaced the front left hub to make the abs codes disappear which they did and I also reversed the car up some ramps to change the Vent Solenoid. I usually cannot feel the car shift at all, weird thing about it is, the car drove perfect early in the morning. Then mid day when I drove it, from start up it was shifting hard at high revs. Then stopped after my second time shutting the car off. The drive home from there shifts were back to not feeling them. The hard shifts occurred at speeds around 10-15mph and then again at 50mph both not shifting till 2000 rpms.

What can I do without a tech 2 scanner? or should I buy one from oriellys and take it back when finished. I'd hate to sell the car, just purchased not too long ago.

most scanners wont read this code if you have AAMCO next to you they can read them for free.

Most likely it is the pressure control switch inside the tranny. Code 1811 max adapt might not be set when it happens. I drove my now junked Aurora for more than a year with intermittent hard shift hot before the code 1811 finally appears.
I also found some bolts that hold the valve body to the tranny were loose. After changing the pressure control switch and clean out the valve body, the tranny works like new till the day I sent my car to the wrecker.

How difficult is changing the filter in the transmission? So far the hard shifting has only occurred once.

There is a sticky in the maintenance section. I would say changing brakes/rotors difficulty level. So if you are okay with that it should be pretty easy. Gets messy though so get some plastic to lay down and a fluid bucket to catch the fluid.

How difficult is changing the filter in the transmission? So far the hard shifting has only occurred once. Very easy. Lift car, remove pan bolts-SLOWLY- to avoid a deluge then pop the pan off and do the filter. I had trouble getting the metal ring out from the filter mounting hole so make sure yours comes out! Two lessons frommy experience. First, if you have a good size suction gun you can drain most of the atf from the dipstick tube to reduce mess. Second, size a pan drop will get 7 or more quarts (total capacity is 7.4qts), you get to refresh all your ATF. Mine had a lot of miles amd the new stuff looked junky and shifting degraded rapidly which was solved with a second fluid change (got 6qts through the dipstick tube).
