why does plenum have to be removed to get the boot out?

The plenum (aka manifold) slips into the plenum gasket. The crossover (between the plenum/manifold and throttle body) is pretty much all one piece of the engine block. No other easier way I'm afraid.
It took me all of 15 minutes to disconnect all the vacuum tubes, electrical connections and fuel rail. Of course I've done this many times before!

Well it's a PITA. I've got hour and a half into it and the plenum is out. Darkness and mosquitoes drove me inside. Hope I don't lose any of those little blue injector O- rings -- every last one came off with the fuel rails.
Any tricks to making sure the 8 port gaskets stay put while dropping the plenum back in place?
I'm a little PO'd that this may have been unnecessary on my car. I trusted the dealer diagnosis and didn't verify it myself by spraying cleaner on the boot. When I started pulling the plenum bolts I found half of them less than finger tight. My boot may have been ok after all, but I'm way past committed now.

Nice...is age or miles the enemy? I haven't hit 100K yet.
Also--what a brilliant idea to mount the starter and solenoid under the plenum.

The manifold gaskets once pressed in will not come out when you flip the plenum over to put it back on the engine. Just make sure they are lined up correctly with the little notch cutout on the plenum side.
My plenum to crossover gasket did not have any tears in it but the little raised gasket on the crossover side was completely flat and did not have a 100% seal. I couldn't tell until I removed it and compared it with a new one.

I had an issue with 2 of the gaskets popping out so I used a little aviation high tack gasket seal. Just used a Q-Tip to put a light coat all around the indent for the gasket and let it tack up for 15 minutes. Plus I put a real light coat of oil on the head so they didn't have any drag on the gaskets. Worked out well.

Well mine is finally back together and purring like new. I've already seen a big improvement in fuel mileage. Besides the loose plenum bolts I had a 1.5" tear in the boot plus a ripped pvc elbow @ the plenum end This explains why my fuel trims were off the chart, and why my throttlebody that I cleaned 4 months ago was already black with oily grime on the back of the butterfly.

Yeah, that'll definitely do it, haha! Glad you got it sorted.
Did you happen to take pics along the way? It would be a great srite-up.
