I broke the first bolt (by tightening pattern), in the back middle of the block. I had a torque wrench gauged in foot pounds, so I took the spec of 89 lb inch, divided by 12 inches in a foot, and got 7.4166. So to start with I set it at 5 footpounds, and it snapped it clean off So I tightened the rest of them with a ratchet carefully, in the order specified.
I should probably get a fresh set of new bolts and replace them, but I'm not sure how bad the process of extracting the broken bolt piece is going to be. Any pointers?
I foolishly took it for a drive in that state, and it ran ok, for a while. It lost some power on the way back, and flashed the check engine light, so I pulled into a parking lot right away, let it cool off a bit, and double checked the connectors for the coil pack and the fuel injectors. Torque for Android reported a Cylinder 3 misfire after this with key on engine off. It started up and ran smooth after this, which got me most of the way back from there, but it lost power again, so I went back to another parking lot. This time there were no codes, but the engine died as I pulled in, and DIC claimed low oil pressure. After a longer cooldown period, it ran fine coming back the 2 blocks or so I had to go to get it back home.
Really not looking forward to what the bolt removal is going to be like, I hope it goes well. How bad did I mess up trying to drive it at all in this state? How do I fix that bolt hole on the engine? Am I better off taking it to a shop for that, and if so how much should I expect to pay, reasonably?
