Does anyone know if GM provides lifetime warranty on safety components such as seatbelts, airbag system equipment?
Reason I ask is my uncle's 2008 Silverado 1500 (5.3L) has had malfunctions with the seatbelt latch on the driverside. It takes a few attempts to get it to latch, and then theirs the airbag system. The sensor is apparently bad and the dealership said that 1. there's no recall on the product and 2.without getting it serviced, the airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident. His truck has 89,000 miles on it so it's past the 36,000 or 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. He hasn't bothered taking the truck in since the seat belt stopped working properly as he sees it as a wasted trip. We called GM's customer assistance program in hopes that they would offer their post warranty replacement plan (can't remember the exact name), but they didn't, just said the truck wasn't covered and their was no recalls.
Plus his reasoning is, "well, I grew up in cars without seatbelts or airbags and I'm fine." My obvious reply was, "you weren't driving vehicles with engineered crunch zones designed to stop the vehicle rather than driving a big block of steel that will go through a Giant Sequoia."
I've done a considerable amount of research on this but all I come up with is that Honda has a lifetime warranty on their seatbelts.

Y, without a recall and at the age/mileage unfortunately those repairs will likely be out of pocket. Which may not be all that bad...did the dealer give an estimate? May not be a bad idea to submit to NHTSA - if there are enough complaints and it's deemed a problem a recall could be issued. In which case GM would be on the hook to reimburse you/him for the cost of the repairs. IIRC there was a recall that may be related...give this a quick read: www.truckmodcentral.com/forums/f97/new-recall-09184-07-09-silverado-sierra-2620/
