Another weekend, another trip into the "new" '98 Aurora to troubleshoot little electrical issues. I fixed some illumination that wasn't working on the climate control panel, I got my radio in so I have Bluetooth now, so the last couple of things are the outside mirror right side has no up-and-down, the fuel gauge bounces around (I've seen threads about the sender....) and the cruise control won't engage (I know I have no "Set" signal at the module when I press the set button, but that's as much as I've done.) I intended to go for the mirror and the cruise today, but didn't make it to the cruise.
Popped the door panel, found the connector, and tested the mirror by feeding the correct pins battery and ground. All motion worked. That means it's either the switch, the memory module, or the wiring. Time for some continuity tests.
The connector has 6 wires: yellow, purple/white, red/white, light blue, light green, and black/white. My shop manual does not identify the light green and black/white anywhere that I can find, but if the mirrors are heated, those must be that. The yellow and purple/white control up and down, with one being grounded and the other hot, depending on which way the switch is pressed. The red/white and light blue control left and right. The yellow is common to both left and right side mirrors, and the light blue is also common.
What made this difficult is that the mirror memory module is under the driver's seat, and those connectors are a pain in the nether regions. Another difficulty was that the shop manual identifies the connector with the wires from the switch in the "Seats" section, but it identifies the connector that outputs those signal to the mirrors in the "wiring systems" section, about 550 pages apart! I never found the mirror connector in the door identified in the manual, but I had the color codes from the schematic so I was good.
Anyway, got the big connectors loose, one containing the wires to the mirrors, the other containing the wires from the switch. Continuity testing showed that the yellow wire never reaches the passenger door. Great. I tested continuity back to the switch, too, and that was fine, so the switch IS commanding the right mirror to move up and down, but with the break in the yellow wire there's no circuit. And seeing as I have NO interest in running a wire tonight to replace the yellow wire, the mirror stays as it is for now. Another "someday" project....
I really do want to get that fixed, though, because I'd seen in the owner's manual that the right side mirror turns down when reversing the car so you can see the ground as you back up, then returns to your set position when you shift to Park or Drive.
One other thing. While under the seat, I found that it's quite damp under there, and apparently is wet a lot! Carpet was damp, and the framework supporting the connectors and the seat/mirror memory module had a lot of surface rust. The rest of the floor is not damp, and I don't see any evidence of it coming through the door opening. Great! ANOTHER thing to track down!!!!
