The 2001 I just got has a few known issues, and one I didn't know about when I bought the car. Once a day so far, I've run into a situation where turning the key to start doesn't seem to do anything. If I try 5-10 times more, it will start and run fine. I have not seen a CEL from this. Just today, I had it die on the way out the driveway. Started right up in neutral after that.
I suspect the crankshaft position sensor, but I was wondering if there's any other known causes for these symptoms.

I suspect the crankshaft position sensor... Haha, I suspect you're right, and remember, CKP sensor"s" on the 4.0. Mine did the same thing, but it did eventually throw a code (for B sensor). May as well replace both while you're at it. And if you DIY, watch out for your oil pressure sender. I cracked mine, another 40 bucks, lol!

Thanks! I did order new ones from rock auto with 2day shipping so I'll have them in time for the weekend install. Called a local stealership and found that they want 450 parts and labor. Guess I'll just go with the 60 dollar parts and beer instead, and hope I don't need to take it to them for a relearn.
Not sure exactly where I need to go on the engine to replace these though. My local library has an auto service section of their website, but it pales in comparison to the service manual or alldata. I can access alldata from the local branch of the library.
PS, tigger, I notice you have almost the same car as me now. Gold badges?

^ A little hard to reach? LOL! It's not impossible though. Here's a pretty good write-up a member did last year - 4.0L - Changing Crank Positions Sensors. PS, tigger, I notice you have almost the same car as me now. Gold badges? Yeah, we've got quite a few "white diamond" Auroras around here. And no, no gold badges on mine. Plain 'ol chrome.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I should have the new sensors by Friday and I'll get them installed this weekend. I'll update this thread when I know if it fixed the problem. Next on the list: Power steering pressure hose, rear wheel hubs, and brake fluid change. And of course a proper wash/claybar/polish/wax The passenger airbag problem code mysteriously went away the day after I bought the car and hasn't come back yet *knock on wood*, so I think she likes me! Either that or she knows how deep into the 2002 I went chasing the sunroof drain and decided to be nice to avoid surgery Yeah, we've got quite a few "white diamond" Auroras around here. And no, no gold badges on mine. Plain 'ol chrome. From what I've seen, they'd probably be flaking back down to plain chrome by now anyway. I'd like to see if there's a way to refinish them back to gold, or if I should just use 0000 steel wool to get em back down to chrome. For now, there's more important things to worry about though

Mine were very easy to get to honestly. Other than an AC line preventing one from being pulled out. However I had previous experience removing the filter adapter and pressure sensor. So I unbolted the compressor to move the line out of the way. I had not heard anyone have that specific issue but I did.

So, I got the advice to stick with the AC Delco parts a little late, and ended up with Ultra Power. When I installed them, it refused to start, and threw codes for both CKP sensors. When a car needs a CKP relearn, it will still start, right? So I just have to RMA these and get proper AC Delco parts, right?

Well that blows! Do the old ones still work (crank the car)?

Put the old ones in and it cranked first try. It has codes for both crankshaft sensors now, though I suspect that is from how many times I tried to crank it on the bad cheap ones. On the Ultra Power sensors, I was also getting an intermittent code for camshaft position sensor A. Guess it's time to do an RMA with RockAuto

Sorry I didn't give you the heads up in the first post. I'm just so used to buying top shelf electric/ignition parts for this car, it never crossed my mind to mention it. RA is pretty decent on returns...

No worries man. I wouldn't have gone with the cheap stuff normally except that I was still in the process of moving and still haven't got my insurance payout yet.

Finally put in ACDelco parts for this the night before last. It's been running smoother. Tonight I had the same no start happen in a parking lot. Am I one of the unfortunate ones that needs a relearn? If that won't help then I need a starter or an ignition switch. Any other ideas?

Is the engine light still on with crankshaft position sensor codes or did they go away?

Is the engine light still on with crankshaft position sensor codes or did they go away? I cleared the codes a few days earlier after using steel wool to appease the check gas cap message that had just come up. I have not seen any codes come back for the crankshaft position sensor so far.

Well, it's been almost a week and I haven't run into this issue again yet. I'm guessing it was just a fluke. *fingers crossed*
Time for the intake gaskets and fuel sender now!

Good to hear!
For the most part, if it starts, it'll "relearn" on it's own.
