Hello, everyone. More transmission woes, horray! I was driving to work this morning on the highway (about 70mph) and my car started popping out of 4th gear. It would try to go in but then go back to neutral, all in the span of a second or two. I dropped it down into 3rd and that let me get off the highway and about halfway home. Then it started doing it in 3rd as well, so I put it in neutral and let it coast for a bit, then back into 3rd and didn't have an issue. It started doing it in 3rd gear a couple times on the way home, but I was able to make it back. Other information: There's a whining noise that has been becoming more and more pronounced over the past couple of weeks. I could usually only hear it when the car was cold, but yesterday I heard it when it was warm. It seemed like it was just after startup though, but now I'm thinking that the exhaust note hid the noise from me since I drive it easier when it's cold thus not as much noise, and the only time I could hear it. I'm not sure if this noise is related to the tranny issues, but you can hear it when you rev it now. I took a quick video. It's the higher pitched wine. Definitely wasn't there before: The important problem, however, is that the trans won't shift properly. I replaced the solenoids last year so I wouldn't think that's it. I'm hoping that it's an easy fix but I know it won't be. I've never done any transmission repair beyond shift solenoid replacement, so any help anyone can lend me in trying to figure out what this is would be excellent.

The video sounds like a Ford power steering pump! Hope it's not a trans oil pump. Just don't know enough about the 4T80-E to give an educated guess given your symptoms...

No one has an idea? Don't worry, I was stumped too. Took her to a trans shop today that we trust and use at work. They're going to attempt to diagnose the problem and see if they can find how much it will cost for a solution. Hopefully it's easy, a full rebuild on one of these would run $2500, which would mean the end of my Aurora under my ownership, at least. I don't have the time nor the desire to swap in an older tranny, even. Pray for an easy fix, please!

Take this with a grain of salt because I don't know if I would put $2500 into my car also. It is a strange thing though. Consider if the Aurora is your daily transportation how can you replace it with another car for less than $2500? If you go out and buy a different $2500 car is it any better than your Aurora with a new transmission? Maybe. But its not a 100% thing.

Well Sall, you were correct. Torque converter is failing. Toronado3800, I have had the same thoughts these past couple of days. Do I just bite the bullet and get a brand new trans, get a replacement car temporarily for a year or two, or just get the new car we were planning on getting in a couple years now instead of later? That decision is still in process, but I know that I won't be fixing the Olds. The transmission shop's diagnosis was that the torque converter is going out as the car is fine when cold but the condition worsens the more you drive it. They recommended a full rebuild of the trans and replacing the torque converter. He said you can just replace the torque converter but that's a bandaid at best, as it is most likely throwing metal shavings in the trans and that will eventually fail also. I can't bring myself to scrap the car, and I'm not selling it to a salvage yard, I've seen what happens to Auroras in those places. I wanted the car to stay in the ACNA family if possible, so I knew immediately who to ask. Randy is going to come pick her up in the next couple of weeks and take her to MO where he will eventually fix her back up again. It still hasn't quite hit me yet that I can't drive to work in the Olds on Monday like normal. I've had 9.5 years and 97,000 miles in that car. She will be missed, but at least she'll be close enough that I can see her at the meets and stuff! It's still a gorgeous car and I love it to death, but it's time to move on. I know Randy will take good care of her! Sent from my Galaxy Note 4 via the ProBoards app

9 years huh. Impressive.
At one point I realized I has my Toronado a decade and thought it was just time to get something different.
Heck, at the time I hadn't ever kept a woman a decade lol.
Good luck with your next car. GM has a couple fromt wheel drive V8s and I've always like Rivieras bit don't know about old supercharged motors.
What ya thinking about?

I am sure Randy will drop the subframe with drivetrain and throw another under it and have it back on the road. Is he taking the parts car too?

Yup, that's the plan. He actually offered to give me a new trans and torque converter he has, but I'm ready to move on.
Going to scrap the parts car, we'll just have the local pick n pull pick it up. There aren't many parts left on it worth taking.
I'm kicking around a lot of ideas, you guys will know when I pick something!
