So, last summer I replaced belts and tensioners on both ends (plus the idler up front!). Used OE (Delco) parts from RA. All was lovely until tonight...
Mrs. Tigger calls, from a parking lot, telling me the DIC said "ENGINE HOT...A/C OFF" and then "HOT...STOP ENGINE" just before she could shut it down (<30 seconds, and yeah, she knows). Haha, if you haven't guessed from the title, the tensioner pulley exploded! I'll post some pics tomorrow, pretty disappointed...
Anyay, changing the oil in the morning...
Anybody want to start a poll as to whether or not I'm screwed? LOL, may get the 4.6 sooner than anticipated... But I did miss my game, haha...

I hope not, Tigger! Not Mrs. Tiggers fault though!

That's whatcha get for driving an old car from a defunct brand. <G> Mine didn't explode, but it was close. I'd think at the very least you'd want to also replace the pump and belt? I imagine those were "stressed" some. PS ... is that a 4.0L? Rumor has it that's got a "limp home" mode that supposed to be able to get you a good 50 miles at normal speeds with NO coolant ... Opens up and kills half the cylinders so those act as air pumps to compensate or some such. Any volunteers to test if it works?

I hope not, Tigger! Not Mrs. Tiggers fault though! Thanks, and I do know it's not her fault. She did good, lol! Thanks Rob! Thanks Paul! skizo, don't know if it tripped "limp" mode... Anyway, used oil looked like used oil, feeling a little better. Ordered a case of Dex VI and a Tstat, not going after the pump unless it stops pumping, haha! Couple pics of the tensioner; nothing left but the inner race and a sliver of the pulley (stuck in the spring)!

I lost my water pump pulley a couple months ago on the interstate. I heard a noise, just though I hit something, then a few minutes later got the dic message. I got my 4.6 a little warmer than normal, but not in the red, been ok so far. Luckily I had an extra in the back and had it back running in 10 minutes, I have another extra in a box in my back floorboard, these things go out all the time. I buy new tensioners at the salvage yard when I see them, so many Northstars.
Limp mode is on Cadillacs and Auroras, it does shut down half the engine from firing, but most years if you are to that point, it's way too late, anyways. Water pumps on these rarely fail, they are a direct shaft drive from the pulley to the wp blades, the blades have to be gone for the water pump not to work, or the bearings go bad. All Auroras 95-03, have bad coolant crossover gaskets if they have not been changed, coolant crossover is what your water pump is mounted in.

To anyone but a lawyer trying to limit across the board liability or a marketer trying to push a name or different set of headlights on the same frame : Chevy is not a company. Acura is not a company. Lexus is not a company. Olds was not a company in the 90's. Infinity is not a company. If I see a 4th gen F body except Trans Am or Z28 are essentially the same. GM is the maker and the 4.0 / 4.6L is their baby. Not my favorite for reliability but interesting enough I wanted to own one. My Auroa is 18 years old and splits daily duties with my "newer" 17 year old MarkVIII. Amazing.

Wow, that sucks. Surprised it only lasted a year, esp. being a Delco part. Glad it sounds like no major damage done!

Missed that by a good 2 months, oh well... But like I said, disappointed... Anyway, dropped the trans pan and refilled (X2, even though it looked and smelled fine), changed Tstat and topped off coolant. So far, so good... And yes, she's been through quite a few "extracurricular" activities this weekend, lol!

Not to throw the thread off course, but Tigger where did you pick up your Dex VI?

I use the walmart supertech. They usually have plenty. GM approved license holder as a rebrander.

Yeah I can't seem to find that at my local Wal-Mart. The only one I saw last time I looked was their dex/merc kind. Unless that's the one you are referring to.

Oh, yeah, they definitely don't have that at my local one. I may check ones a little further out. Been wanting to do a trans fluid change for awhile.

O'Reilly stores around here carry Valvoline Dex VI. More $$ than the W-M version tho...

I saw that sall, but if you look close at the bottle they list it as a "synthetic blend" so I was uncertain about it. I would really love to do Valvoline. Looks to be the best available but I wouldn't be surprised if the walmart stuff was the same but in a different bottle haha.

Not to throw the thread off course, but Tigger where did you pick up your Dex VI? Amazon Prime, baby! 2 day FREE shipping, no tax, lol! I did the pan drop(s) with bulk Dex III, I'll run the VI in through the cooler line in a week or two. Kind of tired of messing with the stuff right now, haha! FWIW, I'm running SuperTech Dex VI in my power steering pump, seems to work well, cheaper than power steering fluid...

It is all basically the same, Rob. A base oil with GMs additive pack. GM has approved it, can't be bad. Pretty strict requirements. Yeah! Tigger, I got it in my PS as well.

Update:
Doing fine almost 3 weeks later! Runs @ normal temp, oil looks good, coolant looks good, finished the trans fluid exchange, shifts good. No leaks (that weren't already there). Looks like I may get off light on this one, haha!
Thanks for the support guys, I was very doubtful that I'd get out unscathed. Fingers crossed, lol!
