Hey everyone,
I have another potentially severe problem. For the third time in the last few months, I got a flashing check engine light while driving on the highway. I quickly ran my OBDII port scanner and it gave the following codes:
CURRENT FAULT - P0442 - Powertrain - Evaporative emission control system leak detected (small leak) (talked about in a previous thread)
PENDING FAULT - P0300 - Powertrain - (Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected)
PENDING FAULT - P0410 - Powertrain - Secondary air injection system
PENDING FAULT - P0440 - Powertrain - Evaporative emission control system
The only new code that was generated was the P0300 which detected a misfire. All three times this has happened, it was while driving on the highway but not for a long time (within the first minute of entering the highway). Flashing MIL stops after 15ish seconds every time. I've read this very informative thread below where another member seemed to be having the same problem that I was:
aurorah.proboards.com/thread/15305
It seems that whatever is causing the misfire is sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust system and into the cat, damaging it to some extent. In the above thread, it seemed that what was causing the misfire was bad coil packs. Am I wise to think that my issue is caused by the same thing? Or has any new information been come up related to this issue since 2009? What I really need to know is should I absolutely not be driving the car while this is happening? It's my daily driver to work and everywhere else, and need to know if it's a death sentence to the cat or other components to continue driving it until I can get it looked at. My work trip is only 8-10 minutes on 45mph roads, and the engine temp barely reached halfway on the gauge by the time I'm there. As I said before, this seems to happen only randomly (maybe once a month) but always in the first minute or so of highway driving. There's plenty of times I drive on the highway for much longer distances and never get this code.
Thanks in advance
