Hi all, I searched for 4.0 replacement alternator procedure threads, but was unable to locate any. My alternator is probably bad, as there was a warning about the charging system on the DIC & battery light on the cluster. I checked the voltage meter on the DIC while driving & slowly went down, so probably bad alternator. The alternator doesn't look easy to remove & appears that it needs to come out of the bottom. The issue is that the ac compressor appears to be in the way, but I haven't removed the alternator from the block yet. Any procedure methods aval or advise? Also this came up on my DIC after the volts got to about 10.9 or so. Started shutting down non essential electrical components, like ABS, Trac Control, radio, ect. Thought that was pretty cool! Thanks! Troy

Well i think correct way is from top by removing a lot of things but maybe its only on 3.5.. i will take a look today will let you know. Plus sometimes bad battery or short can cause this as well or the wire from Alt is an issue or like ground cable.

Well, I got that beast out of there. I did it as per the video above, but I also removed the upper tiebar (see photo). Took me about 1-1.5 hrs to remove. Here are some photos of the parts I removed. I also removed the air box, not in photo. Much easier like he says in the video. I took the alternator to a local electrical rebuild shop. They quoted me a full rebuild of $150, but it tested good & only needed brushes replaced. Cost $26.00. I could of gotten a AC Delco alternator here, but was 2 days away. www.amazon.com/dp/B0031I668S/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1PDAQ4S7QXW7V&coliid=I1WOMRFUDQYOLONo local aftermarket auto store (Napa, Advanced, Car Quest, ect) had one in stock, not that I would have bought one there anyways, but was quoted between $225-$265. The issue started as I was driving my vehicle to the store today & just snowed here the day before. The roads were snow/water covered & was driving thru some pretty wet conditions. I assume the alternator got wet & was arching in the brushes (per shop) & wasn't charging the battery properly. The alternator dried out & now working properly with the new brushes. Just a guess here tho.

Hey Troy, nice work!
Just wanted to let you know that the FSM procedure does call for pulling the radiator, but not the airbox. Guess there really is more than one way to skin a cat, lol!
I've never seen the Battery Saver Active message before, didn't know it existed honestly. She's still got the original alternator, but we're on the third battery, haha. I'll have to check if that can be turned on/off in the DIC, pretty nice feature to have...

Here's a thread for the alternator change on the Classic. Not sure how different it is.

Just a FYI these alternators are very easy to rebuild.
