So for the last week my car has been having a hard time starting from time to time. Ill go out to start it and it will just turn over unless i give it gas and even after giving it gas and letting off it will die. After several times doing that it will finally stay running and be fine the rest of the day, then it will do it again. Once running it drives fine and there are no check engine light for it. Its a 2001 4.0.. thanks
I topped the tank off with new gas and ran some sea foam through it and when i went out this morning still would not start.

Try cleaning the throttle body and IACV (idle air control valve) before you buy any parts. Sounds like you have a carbon build up issue and the IACV is sticking.
When you "give it gas" before the engine starts, all you're effectively doing is opening the throttle plate. This gives the engine enough air to start, but as you've found, when you let off of the accelerator, the throttle plate closes and the engine stalls. The fact that after a few cycles of this the engine runs fine is actually encouraging, indicating to me that as it warms up the IACV "unsticks" itself. At least, until the engine gets cold again...
FWIW, had the same/similar issue at ~100K that never threw a code, pulled the TB for a GOOD cleaning... Still purring like a kitten 50K later, lol!

update after looking at it, i found that it threads in and that it threaded out quit aways, screwed it back in and started right up, i will still replace it.
so i pulled the idle air valve out and according to pics the valve should be pulled in and it was stuck out, should i be able to move that hand ?

You can install the IACV with the pintle extended, but no more than 28mm. And yes, you can manually compress the pintle if it is extended more than 28mm. After the IACV is installed and connected, the PCM will reset it with one ignition ON/ignition OFF cycle. Then do the relearn; Start the vehicle and idle for 15 seconds Turn the key to OFF and wait for 15 seconds Start the vehicle and monitor idle...

I just recently bought mine. No codes, similar starting issue. She turns over a few times and will crank, but some times when she cranks she dies instantly. Turn it over to more times and it fires right up runs fine after that. Have changed, fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition switch and going to try cleaning throttle body and idle air valve, praying this works.
