Hi....first post....TY for having me. This '01 of my mother's has been problematic to say the least. How can I or is it posted somewhere, test a bank of coils? I believe this is a problem area for these 4.0 and am surprised there's no sticky on this. I'm sure I'll be informed why soon enough. This car has had a lot of issues with the coil packs over the last 5 years....4 or 5 issues. IIRC it's been the flashing CELissue mostly. Just wondering for the garage mechanic like myself, if there's a way to test at least which bank it is. I have not pulled codes but will tomorrow. It's running like ASS right now, just like in the past when the coil rails were replaced. Yes...I may not be correct in my diagnosis but let's plz just say i am. No codes to go by at the moment, but want to figure out which one. TIA guys!!! Happy 4th!!!! SEMPER FI.

Each coil pack (GM calls them coil cassettes) contains 4 coils and an ICM (ignition control module). You can't bench test through the ICM to my knowledge, but I think you can test (ohm or continuity) the coil windings between the connector and electrodes once the ICM is removed. Let me know if you want the pin-out....
Most people don't bother though, a replacement ICM and a replacement coil pack w/ an ICM cost about the same...
Pull the codes. Make note of the P030X code(s). Odds are rear bank, evens are front (i.e., P0303 is rear bank). Then, swap the coil packs front to back, back to front. Start the engine, and let it idle until it noticeably runs rough. Shut it down and pull the codes again. If the miss follows the coil pack, it's bad. If it stays the same, you have other problems.
