Ok you folks with the nav upgrades, you've piqued my interest big time, dang it. When I first bought the car, I considered the nav, but then felt it would be an annoying feature what with it not having any radio buttons easily accessible. The topper for me was that in 2002, you could not get the Bose if you got Nav (that changed for '03).
But I use the steering wheel controls almost exclusively for radio control, plus I rarely listen anyway. So, I'm interested in putting Nav in my car. I have Bose and OnStar but not a 12-disc changer.
So what do I need? I'm guessing I need the 2003 Nav headunit since it works with the Bose speakers? Do I need a 12-disc changer also? Is this stuff all fairly straightforward to install? Anyone have part #'s that I'd need?

I have GPS in both of my Auroras one 2002 and other 2001. 2001 has a Bose and 2002 doesnt, both cars didnt come with factory nav but after looking for them on ebay i found 2 and bougth them. in 2002 Aurora i knew that its going to work since i dont have a BOSE in it and it did without a problem. It is only a matter of removing the old radio and putting it navigation radio. CD changer works with it and steering wheel controls also without any problems. 2001 Has a BOSE and doent have a CD changer but when i put the radio in BOSE logo came up on the screen and i was suprised that there is no difference in sound. As for a CD changer i use FM transmitter with USB memory card and i dont need a cd changer at all. BTW in 2001 i had to get the radio unlocked at the dealership.

Yes, though headunits are relatively hard to procure, but if you find one all you need to do is swap out the old one with the new one (also a very, VERY easy process). To get GPS reception you need to get the GPS antenna, too, which plugs right into the back of the radio. They run about $50 on the net. From what I've been reading, there are two GPS antennas: - the OnStar antenna seems to have something to do with overall positioning and following your cursor (triangle on the map) as you drive the streets and whatnot. - the second, GPS antenna, which normally is installed below the front defrost vent in the dash, has to do more with data: elevation, lat/longitude, and the such. It seems to be more of an accuracy thing. Obviously this is in very general terms, but it's just extrapolating from how your car behaves when it has either one antenna or the other - such as norbi's when he only had the OnStar, or Thae's right now, as he only has the GPS antenna that plugs into the radio. We (I, or forum members) can give you map CDs if you end up getting a nav radio... as of now we have a pretty good database of all the MCAs (pending my uploading of MCA7 - this week  As for a CD changer: The nav radio is CD based, and it only has ONE CD slot. The single CD slot can be used for the nav CD, OR a music CD (or even a CD with .html files which you can browse in the nav radio... but that's something else . On this note, it is much more convenient, if you typically use CDs, to have a CD changer, too. As for the radio itself, I'm not going to post installation stuff/pictures, but I'm going to post a review within a week or two... if you wanted to know more about it. I love the radio, a worthwhile upgrade for <$300. |

Interesting Thread.
I had the understanding that the head radio unit was the same for the Bose or non Bose options. The Bose opton was just a speaker option with special cross-overs. I did not know the head unit was a different unit for Bose. Hence I would assume that the Nav unit would work OK with Bsse or non Bose speaker option.
The second antenna was a surprised to me.

The Nav radio i bought for my moms 2001 with Bose wasnt even bose and i was very curious if it will work since i head that BOSE radios are little different but it proved me wrong when it worked prefectly and even when it turns on it shows Oldsmobile Logo on it and underneath is shows Sound by BOSE logo. So it looks like BOSE or Non BOSE nav radio wont make any difference. As for CDs i have couple CDs i already send couple of them to couple people here and i copied 3 from other member so we have a little CD trading here . Nav radio whether is works or doesnt its still worth getting as an upgrade since it looks cool, more modern and easy to use. If you need CDs just post it here and we try to help you.

You can retrofit a 12 disc CD Changer as well (I did it), but it's a little bit of work (not hard but you need to splice into the factory wiring). You can't use the NAV function if you have an audio CD in the CD slot in the radio. Conversely, you can't play a CD if you have a Map CD in the CD slot  You can always add the 12 disc CD changer later. You have a few options for getting the factory NAV radio. I ordered mine through a GM Radio outlet and got a refurb'd with 1 year warranty for $600. Or you can check out EBay and take your chances for about $300 or so. It's up to you. Remember that Map CDs are a few years old and don't have the most updated info, but that doesn't really concern me because there hasn't been a lot of 'build up' (i.e. new roads, etc.) in my area. Any questions just ask. It's a nice mod if you plan on keeping the car for a while. Chris |

From somewhere like P&G Chevy, it would be about $350 plus shipping for both, though I'm sure they'd have to check availability.

For my 1st nav radio i bought off ebay in 2004 i paid 640$ and second radio i bought for my moms 2001 Aurora i paid 250$, the guy that sold me the radio had another one for the price and i told somebody here that was interested in one and bought the other one from him for same price.

Aurora40, Actually, the Navigation Radio was $1,035 on the factory option list for 2003 for reference. The 12-Disc CD Changer was $460 added to any Aurora radio. It was a mandatory option added to the Nav radio when it was ordered. The total of the two was $1,495 for 2003 for reference. I was thinking about putting in the nav radio some years ago, but after considering that for a time, I thought that it would be better all around to put in an aftermarket item, which I did, and here's how it looks:  Hardest part here was making the mount for the top of the center stack. |

Marc, Nicely done - the blue profile must be a hands-free profile to support your phone. I guess your added speaker and mike looks like a blue-tooth hands free head set.
It is kinda of like a second onstar system. Onstar supports an integrated cell phone with mike and using the radio speakers.
Another neat project would be to figure out how onstar works thru the car speakers/radio and find a way to connect thru a bluetooth receiver to it.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the wiring of onstar cellphone to the radio??

New radios are definitely no longer available.....only refurbished ones are available, and those are around half the cost of the $1300. |

You don't need an external antenna for an aftermarket GPS. They come with built in antennas that work well. I have been using a Garmin Street Pilot III for several years & have found that its own antenna is good.

You would need an external antenna for the stock nav radio. Try to get the stock antenna, because I'm not sure whether those ebay antennas would fit.

i meant the stock one in the head unit for 02s and 03s As far as I know you'll need one from GM, but the connector isn't strange, it seems to be a standard MMCX or TNC, or other type of standard GPS-antenna conncetor. I'm just not sure what type of connector it is, so I didn't take the chance and I bought the GM one. The part number for the GM one is 9386403, and you can get it from Brasington (google them) for about $55 shipped. GMPartsdirect.com is about $47 shipped, or something. |
