Ok. I own a 97 aurora. The other night I noticed my instrument panel was not coming on. I then checked the other lights around my car and noticed my tail lights are also not working. My headlights, break lights, and turn signals all still work fine. I checked every fuse and used a tester to check for a short but couldn't find one. I took my multi-function switch off and cleaned it a few months ago to fix a headlight fluttering problem. Hope I didn't mess something up.

Could this be caused by my Multi-Function switch, because I noticed my cruise control isn't working either.

Could this be caused by my Multi-Function switch, because I noticed my cruise control isn't working either. That certainly sounds like a possibility. You might need to replace the switch, which several members here have also done (if the cleaning doesn't work). Double check fuses, and if they're all fine you might only be left with replacing the switch. P.S. I see there's 2.5 months between your two posts above ... have you been driving without dash or tail lights all this time??

LOL, no, I have a couple other cars I drive. The Aurora is my daytime car for now, but I sure can't wait for it to be full-time

I don't think it would be the MF. Check the harness at the lighting control module(big box above the passenger kickpanel) and maybe reseat it. Do the brake lights work? Also, is your interior dimmer turned up enough that you could see them?

Yeah the dimmer switch works. I know this because I ran a wire from the tail light fuse to the tail light wiring harness, and the lights worked, all of them. Even the dash lights come on when I do this. Strange huh? The brake lights always work, blinkers too. So when I have that wire connected, everything works, dimmer and all. But as soon as I disconnect the wire from the tail light harness, they cut off along with the dash lights. I don't see how these two are connected since they are so far apart. And all the other lights work fine all the time.

Sounds like a bad ground. You would be surprised to see what different things they put on 1 ground. I disconnected the ground in my trunk for the power antenna and my turn signals stopped working, the auto mirror would go down like I was in reverse everytime I hit the brakes, and bunch of more minor things. I would start checking grounds.

I don't know much about electrical stuff. Where are the grounds located? Where do I start?

There are quite a few grounds. I don't have any diagrams, but many here do. You may want to send a PM to aurorabrain, he has helped me out a couple times with diagrams.

So has anyone else ever had this problem? I had a 96 and a 97 that did this. I never got the 96 fixed, I just sold it. I don't want to sell this car, could it be the MF switch?

I'm having the exact same problem , i just got this car and this is one of the problems I'm facing. One thing I'll like to add is that the previous owner installed a remote starter(RS), the RS is supposed to flash the marker lights a.k.a.; tail lights and front marker lights, and the dash ON and OFF and it does! BUT when I bypass the RS after I stick the key in the ignition the lights turn OFF and I cant manualy turn them back on with the MFS. When i switch ON the signals the lights do come on and the brake lights come on also, I also think that the MFS is not activating the marker lights. Also, the dash dimmer is all the way up and works when the RS is activating the lights, and the DIC only comes on if the MFS is set to OFF and the Sentinel/dimmer is all the down til' it clicks OFF. I would really appreciate some advice , and I am gonna try that grounding kit. thanks.

I'm a little confused. So which lights are NOT working when the engine is turned on and you're driving?
Aftermarket remote start modules have a history of causing electrical problems. Do you know where the RS was installed by the previous owner?

The lights that don't come on when I'm driving is the marker lights unless i use them to signal, meaning: the very same lights that get brighter or turn on when u hit the signal switch (I.E. the front 2 yellow lights between the headlights and the tail lights). For example, if I drive at night only the Headlights are lit, the lights behave exactly as if I'm constantly in DRL Mode(only headlights ON and dash is OFF). I think u might be right about the RS, because when I was troubleshooting the lights I used the RS multiple times to see how the lights behaved with it in control and in 2 occasions the lights stayed on and everything worked perfectly. So Im gonna ask the previous owner for more info and remove the RS, I'll be sure to provide an update.Thanks.
