I wonder what encouraged GM to replace the strut-type trunk hinges with the "U" arm kind? The strut type won't crunch something in the trunk, like the other's.

That's a great observation, I didn't even notice there was a difference. The classic trunk setup makes very efficient use of the space.

Initially I thought cost cutting however the trunk does have a noticably wider opening (from top at least), so who knows?
