It's a good idea to replace the cabin air filter in the 2001 once a year. I took care of this today. To remove the cabin filter door on the right side of the cowl, open the hood. Then push back and lift up the 2 catches on the leading edge of the door. The door can be removed from the cowl now. Pull the filter retaining catch to the right, as I am doing in the first picture. The old filter can then be removed, and the new one put in. The second picture shows how one segment of the filter has to be folded underneath the other 2 segments of the filter. Install the filter with that one segment folded that way, and the filter goes in with the folded - under segment against the retaining catch. Finally, place the hinges at the rear of the door below the edge of the cowl and push the door back into place.

Does the 1st gen have a cabin air filter?

www.acdelco.com/html/catalog does not list a cabin air filter for the first gen. It evidently doesn't have one. ___________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

To add more confusion, it was standard on my '01 4.0 but considered a dealer installed option on my '03. When I first purchased the '03, I noticed the filter was missing. I assumed some wiseguy removed it because they are costly to replace (around $30 if I recall). When I went to the dealer to get the element for the '03, he told me it was an option. I don't remember it being listed as one.The '03 didn't have the plastic holder for the element in the car. I went to another dealer and bought a replacement bracket for an '01 and installed it properly.

Heck no, it's not an option. I believe it keeps the A/C system clean, but of course also keeps cleaner air in the cabin. I changed mine at 25k I think. It really wasn't very dirty, though. But after seeing the one in the Regal which probably had never been changed, I wanted to play it safe!!

Only possibility I can think of is if you don't have option package T1U, which was standard on 4.0's until 2003. Do you have dual-zone climate? The distribution/order guide makes no mention of the cabin air filter being dropped or made a dealer-installed option.

Yeah, I do have the dual zone. It was a Bu*ck dealer and they may have been wrong. My original Olds dealer won't service Olds any longer. It seems weird that the holder for the filter was missing along with the element though.

your dealer was probably right. In 2003 the Bonneville also did not have the cabin air filter in some models. It was mysteriously "left out" of the car. They can be added easily by installing the bracket and filter like mentioned. I just don't know why they left it off of the car.
The classic does not have the cabin air filter. It wasn't on the G chassis until 2000+ (or 2001 for the Aurora.)

I changed mine. What I noticed most was the increased airflow, but the air seemed more fresh when in re-circ mode as well. Worth the $20 IMO.

this seems to be the most appropriate cabin filter thread to do this epic bump on. this filter is kind of confusing at first. there is a bracket, and the bottom feels like a regular filter, so i was wondering why it was screwed in on the right side, so i haven't messed with it yet. so now i get it!! the filter is just paper, and it slides into the bracket. but whats with the folding? is that the wrong size? or are you supposed to do that?

Tankman......You are supposed to fold it. I don't understand why they made it like that.

Epic bump....yessirree....
I just changed my cabin filter yesterday - did something stupid, so I thought, and bought one from Rockauto as a throwin on a recent parts order - WIX 24474 - with frame. Turns out that it was really smart, as it fit perfectly after I pulled the original frame. Even better - when I threw it in, the shipping was $10 cheaper than without the filter, and the filter only cost $10.67 with discount - $0.67 net cost cabin air filter.
Correct number is 24474...fat fingers hit the wrong number. sorry guys...

My 03 didn't have one either. No filter, no bracket, nothing but an empty space under the trap door. I thought that maybe it was left off the car as production wound down due to parts shortages. Mine also has the dual zone climate control. I went ahead a bought a filter and have it laying across the opening but it certainly doesn't seem to be the correct set-up. What other GM models would have the correct element holder or maybe a GM part number??

Add one more to the tally of '03s without the bracket or filter:
Final 500 #375 was also missing both pieces. I also ordered both parts from a dealer and self-installed.

So outside air goes straight into the cabin or there is some other mechanism to clean the air?

Outside air goes right into the passenger area without any filtering.

Changed the cabin air filter on my 2003 Aurora. There was nothing installed in there previously - just a deep cavity with the fan at the bottom.

I like to add some smell good to the cabin air filter. A little squirt of my wife's favorite perfume makes the car smell purdy.
