This is just a tip for those who have not thought of changing it, or don't know what it is.
The PCV (Positive Crank Case Ventilation) valve is a small $3.00 part at many automotive stores. You have to remove the plastic engine cover to replace it. After you remove the cover, you'll see a black plastic hose on the bottom right of the engine. That's closest to you not towards the car.
When you take it out, shake it. If it looks oily, or it seems clogged and the little valve isn't moving like it should, then change it.
You'll be surprised how such a small part can give poor fuel economy and lower engine performance when it is clogged. It's also overlooked alot during vehicle inspections, and regular oil changes. I change mine every few months because it's so easy to do, and it's such a cheap part!
Some info: PCV VALVE
Definition: The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is an emissions control device that routes unburned crankcase blowby gases back into the intake manifold where they can be reburned. The PCV system is one of the oldest emission control devices, and also one of the most beneficial. Besides totally eliminating crankcase emissions as a source of air pollution, the constant recirculation of air through the crankcase helps remove moisture which otherwise would cause sludge to form. Thus the PCV valve extends the life of the oil and engine. The PCV valve requires little maintenance. The valve and filter should be replaced somewhere around 30,000 to 50,000 miles (see the vehicle owners manual for service intervals).

I'm confused.... Are we looking at the hose or the valve for the part that gets clogged? Does anyone have a picture of it's location, or is it pretty obvious after you take the engine cover off? Is this the same for the classic 4.0?

Here's the page from the 2001 shop manual showing the location of the PCV valve on the 2001 4.0. I don't know if it's the same on the Classic.

Could the PCV valve ever cause an SES light?

aaaauroraaaa, if you plan to keep your car for very long, factory manuals are a wise investment. Mine has been invaluable for quick reference and to see the "proper" way to do repairs rather than guessing. It pains me to admit I'm not as smart as I think I am .......... sometimes........ahum.......Anyway, as far as the SES light, I'd doubt it 'cause it's not connected electronically to the computer. Yet, could not changing it often enough cause other issues? Hmmmm.......Anyone? I gotta be with webenergy on this one tho. For a measly couple buck now and then it's well worth the time and expense to keep all well under the hood. BTW, everyone check their tire pressure lately?

Actually having a clogged PCV valve can cause engine problems, rough starts, rough engine idle, and poor fuel mileage. I don't think that a clogged PCV valve can cuse the SES light to come on. For the SES light, check your gas cap and filler neck.

OK, I feel really stupid now. I went to service my vehicle today, clean throttle body, add seafoam cleaner to gas and crankcase, K&N air filter & PCV valve. This is where I feel really dumb. I am decent under the hood and looked at the diagram from this thread and say easy enough, was I wrong. When I pulled out what I thought was the PCV valve it was much smaller than the one that Advance Auto sold me and did not have one of those valves that shake and get clogged. It seemed like it was just there to hold on the line. My question is this: Did they change the design on the 4.0 V-8 in the later years or did they sell me the wrong part. They sold me Purolator # V769 Any help is appreciated I wish everything was as easy as on my 1971 455

The picture on partsamerica looks like what I got from Advance Auto. The part in the car is 2/3's th width and there is no shaker inside the PCV that is in the car now.

According to Purolator, the part # for the PCV valve for the 2003 is PV 769. There's also a pic of it at that site.

I purchased PV769 from Advance Auto, it will not fit like diagram says. It's too large See my original post in this thread.

That is exactly where I am looking. I have pulled the hose off and pulled the valve out and it is much smaller and has no shaker inside. I will have to go to a GM dealer and see if they changed the design in 2003.

Yes they did. You should have an empty PCV valve with a 3.0mm hole in the end of it.

Take off sight shield ( engine cover ) and look in rear left corner on the camshaft ( valve ) cover. There is a vacuum hose attached to it. The opposite end disappears into the intake manifold. Usually silver in color about the size of a 12g shotgun shell.

Is it possible to remove the factory valve and then clean it to just put it back in?

GL cleaning it. You can't really. Just pull it out and shake it. Make sure it rattles.... if not, replace.

The valves are $2.99 for the purolator, $1.99 for the Fram. There is absolutely no reason not to buy one (instead of cleaning). Arrow is the PCV

Mine stuck open and on every right turn after slowing down to exit the freeway I blew smoke for 5-10 seconds. I looked like I was fogging for mosquito's!

Changing my transmission mount, intake gaskets, throttle body gaskets, starter solenoid, fuel pressure regulator and pcv valve this weekend. My question is what way should my valve be facing when I put it in small hole towards me or the back bay? Also my starter went out once and my step brother replaced pcv and broke the hose connector at the time that wraps around the pcv. Pretty much trying to figure out how I go about getting a new rubber piece for that or if I make my own to go at the end of that hose I tried to use a ford end and ended up using gasket maker around it for a short fix but I would like to fix it properly or better than that. Any tips and advice would be helpful I'm new to these engines and working on cars in general.

Additionally I'd like not that I used the ford pcv end that worked at first but wasn't tight so I pushed it down and used the gasket maker to provide a seal

If you have a 2003....According to Service Manager at (the former) Ferguson Oldsmobile in Colorado Springs it is incorporated in the Left Valve cover (that would be the one closest to front of car). I’m going to modify mine to accept one from an 2001-2002...BTW 2003 only offered 4.0
