I have been through 3 gas caps in the last 2 months. On the second one I even had a shop look at it hoping that would fix the problem for good. I am still under warranty from their so called work but I was wondering what could be causing this so I know what to tell them to fix this time.
After I install a new cap it is usually good for 2-4 weeks and then I get the Check Gas Cap message and then shortly after the check engine light comes on. I have tried tightening the cap more, not tightening as much but still nothing will stop it.
Thanks for any help, this is driving me crazy because I hate watching stupid sensors pop up on my car.

Evap canister vent valve, or Fuel tank pressure sensor. The sealing lip of the fuel fill pipe could be distorted also. You're getting a P0440 code maybe?

Get it scanned for codes. That's the only way to get to the bottom of this.

They typically go because of dirt intrusion.

I dont know the code number but I have had it ran before and they told me it was the gas cap and I got a new one and it fixed it. But now that I'm on the 3rd one Im sure there has to be a underlying problem. Where the gas cap screws on it dirty and grimey and I think its got some surface rust. It is not rusting but Im pretty sure its surface rust because its got the orangish tint. I tried wiring brushing this off but couldnt get it all. Could this be the cause? Also, what would help get this off?

Also, what would help get this off? Do what I did: put a rag in the opening to catch debris (don't light it out of frustration ). Get some 'wet paper' 400 grit and sand the top of the filler cap to remove the rust. You can use WD40 as a lubricant for the paper. When it is bright and shiny, wipe clean with rubbing alcohol and coat with a thin coat of clear silicone sealer. Let cure for an hour. Remove the rag from the opening. Replace the gas cap. This should fix the corrosion problem for a long time. Mine has been nice a shiny for quite a while.

One aother thing to check is the vent on the fuel pump or sending unit. I just repaired my bad gauge readings....You open up the tank access in the trunk. Two hoses are connected one front and one in the back. In the middle is a vent spur. made to have a hose attached. Mine had no hose attached to it and it was clean. Kinda clean up there and hard for debris to get in but I modded a short hose to go in it. I do not know how the cap warning or gas tank pressure crap is engineered but I can tell you that my tank is well vented at the sending unit or top of the tank. Point is this, the gas tank spur iin the middle was made for a hose. If there is a problem or kink in that hose perhaps it was removed because of this problem. ?? My gas cap area is getting kinda crusty and I do not have this gas cap problem.

Thanks for the help, I'll try the cleaning of it and also I have the part to fix my gas gauge in the mail so when I fix that I'll take a look around there. The check engine light didnt come back on for a while and not until the Check Gas Cap message appeared first. Dont know if it makes a difference.

Read aurorabrains posts again up above, he is exactly right. There are 2 valves that could potentially cause this problem, but are easy to get to and are right on top of the engine. Go to Autozone or Advanced Auto and have themr ead your codes and come back and tell us what you got.

It might not be but aurorabrain a few posts up, said the sealing lip could be distorted and mine was quite distorted and still is after cleaning it, it was starting to rust. Got alot off but still alot more there. And at the shop they said if it was a problem with the EVAP system the CEL would come back on right after it was reset. Mine doesnt come on until about the 5th time or so starting the car with the Check Gas Cap message.
