First off, let me just say this place is nicer than 75-80 Dragway, and I think it may be slightly closer to me. It has better layout and seems a little nicer and the workers seemed a bit more safety-conscious. You can read my first track visit in Edmund's Aurora forum in the Acceleration section. Before I left the house to hit the dragstrip, I removed the spare tire and the rear seat bench (which only weighs like 20 lbs, it's really light). I also gassed up with about 3.5 gallons of 93 at Sunoco (I thought they'd have 94) which would put me at about a 1/4 tank after the ~60 mile drive to the dragstrip. When I got there, I didn't mess with the tire pressures, which I'd set to 33psi a few weeks back, and didn't remove the headlight or anything. Just ran it like I drove it there. First run I was making the mental checks. But I got up there quick and forgot to put it in 2nd. So I launched about 1500 rpm, traction off, in D. The car pulled real hard, snapped the shift at 6400 rpm, and kept going. Unlike my last trip to the track, 3rd gear felt very strong. Last time 1st and 2nd felt strong but 3rd really fell flat. I smoked the guy in the Pontiac Grand Am V6 next to me on the way to a 14.97 @ 91.92 mph with a .208 RT (they don't include the clock time, so .000 is the best) and a 2.311 60' time. I knew it was a great run, the car felt strong, but I figured maybe I'd be under 15.5, which was my big goal. When I got the time slip, I about freaked!! My next run was my best. I was opening the hood while I waited, but surprisingly no one else ever did. I ran a 14.86 @ 92.23 mph, with a .220 RT and a 2.294 60' time against that Grand Am again. Interestingly, he didn't wait in line, they brought him over from the middle. I guess he knew the track folks or something (they'd also annouce the Grand Am V6 running in Lane 1, but say nothing of my car), and maybe he thought I'd be a good matchup for him. His best against me was a 16.38, and even by 330' I was 4/10ths of a second faster (enough to cover my longer RT). He also redlighted each run at about -.03 seconds RT. On this second run, I remembered to toss it into 2nd. I figured it wouldn't make a diff as the car ran to 6400 anyway. Holy crap did it ever! The car charged so hard the needle crossed into the red hashes at 6500, and it jerked sideways on the shift!! It definitely felt like it broke a tire loose, though there was no audible chirp. The car definitely skipped to the side, though. It was awesome!! Then I smoked a guy in an old-style Miata. By that time, the announcer was announcing my car as an Olds Aurora and noted that it had been running pretty strong. This run had my highest trap speed, ran a 14.89 @ 92.56 mph. Then I took a break, ate some nachos, and watched the action with my wife. I saw a Mustang GT (the body style where it could be a 5.0 or a 4.6, both of which made about 215hp) run a 15.2, a totally riced out Accord run a 16.3, and even saw a WRX run a 14.8 or so. So there were a few cars I was pleased to see I'd have smoked pretty badly. A slammed/tricked GTI ran a 14.2, and I can't recall the others that ran slower than me (I think a Hyundai Tiburon that was all pimped). Then I took a last run for the heck of it and we left. It was my worst run, but the car was parked on the grass so the tires were wet and grassy. I didn't do a burnout any of the times. I ran a 15.00 @ 91.41 against some Eclipse. I think he was spraying because I took him off the line, took him to 330', and even passed the 1/8th marker first, though that was due to my better RT, but then he took off. He ran a 13.77 @ 107.85 mph. This time was the highest launch rpm, of probably 2000+ rpm. I'm not sure it helped, though it's hard to say if my poor run was due to the tires. My 60' was 2.320, my 330' was 6.376 (my best was 6.304). But launching at closer to 1500 rpm seemed to work fine and doesn't seem as bad for the car. So there you have it, a 14.86 @ 92.22 mph... Pretty dang impressive, and much better than I was expecting. The temps were just under 50F, my gas tank was about 1/4 full, and of course this time I have the Corsa exhaust. It's a heck of a lot better than the 16.06 @ 85.77 mph best I ran the last time I was at the track!! I'm soooo happy with the car!!! ;D

EXCELLENT!!!! I always thought that the 2001/02/03 was capable of running in the 14s!!! Also, get to www.dragtimes.com/Oldsmobile--Aurora-Drag-Racing.html and enter your ET & speed! There's only one Aurora listed there, a Classic that ran 15.67 @ 90.203. ______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

pretty nice. i figured you woudl smoke that weak ass V6 Grand Am, sheesh. and the 4 banger hyundia lmfao. Long live the Aurora, thats for sure. But im sure the Corsa had something to do with that....the stock exhaust would never be able to push it out that hard. do you have any other upgrades on your car, like high flow cats? my 1995 would probably run a 16, i bet because i dont have the autobahn and my trans probably wouldnt tolerate 1500 rpm launches either as the beating it gets from my around town pedal-to-the-metal and 100mph highway driving is pushing it to destruction.
also, for the 1500 launches, did you hold the brake in a little bit and then punch the gas? or did you hold the brake, get it up to 1500 then hold the gas half way, and once catch traction, floor it? i never floor it straight off the line with TC off because i would just sit and spin. i always do half way and then floor it

Very impressive! Goes to show an engine is an air pump. And that there is an aweful lot of room for upgrading performance in this engine. Also very pretty countyside.

Great narrative, felt like I was there watching. As for the 2nd gear run, just goes to show you what the 4T80E can handle. Things just feel a little different in 2nd gear, then when the PCM force changes the car into 3rd it seems like nothing but power! Sounds like it was a great day 40 and right now, you officially have the faster "proven" car amongst ACNA members...congratulations. I told my girlfriend that we HAVE to go to the track next spring....low low 15's in a modded classic seems very achievable based on your 14.86

Thanks Marc! I figured you'd be almost as excited as me about the 2001+ cars performance. I went to that site, but it requires me to register... Not sure I want a bunch of spam emails from there. Now you've just got to get the Corsa... What more could you be waiting for? Oh, man they sounded even sweeter with the back seat cushion removed. I could hear the exhaust much better in the car, and man was it sweet sounding. There was also more road noice, but even at 80 mph, you could talk in a normal tone and be heard, the road noise was noticeable but not loud. As for the 2nd gear run, just goes to show you what the 4T80E can handle. Things just feel a little different in 2nd gear, then when the PCM force changes the car into 3rd it seems like nothing but power! Yeah, our tranny is pretty sweet, as is the PCM that controls it. I couldn't believe it ran into the redline, though. Man it was awesome when it shifted! I've never felt the car shift that hard before!! I think the PCM really takes mileage into account. Prior to about 20k, it was hard to get it to run to 6400 at all, it only did it when the car was very well warmed up and the selector was in 2nd. Now it'll hit 6400 anytime I floor it practically. But I never expected it to break loose on the 1-2 shift! The car is much faster than when it was new. Sounds like it was a great day 40 and right now, you officially have the faster "proven" car amongst ACNA members...congratulations. I told my girlfriend that we HAVE to go to the track next spring....low low 15's in a modded classic seems very achievable based on your 14.86 Heheheh!! ;D ;D I'd "heard" of one classic guy with a 1995, chip, exhaust and some intake thing saying he hit 14.9 in the 1/4, but it was fairly unofficial. I think it was on autopia and I'd PM'd him as he was a fellow Aurora owner. So perhaps having the quickest time so far be from a very lightly modified 2002 will change the tune of some of you classic owning haters out there... ;D I'd be interested to know what a classic with the TB and exhaust can run. Will you have that thing by spring? Oh, Steven, I just held the gas at 1500 with the brake on, took my foot off the gas, and laid into it. There were some drag cars there that were putting a lot of rubber down on the track. It was pretty easy to get traction and launch. Though I do wonder if I'd have done better with TC on. Seville guys claim they run better with it on, and I did squeal them for a couple of seconds. From lights on the street, I don't brake torque it, just roll into the throttle. Even rolling on it the car will peel out pretty good. With TC on, it sounds pretty cool because it chirp chirp chirps against the TC.

I can certainly scan up my timeslip if anyone wants, I understand that seeing is believing. But if you want to see my 2nd best run, here it is. Listen to the announcer. It doesn't look like it, but I beat this guy to the 60' in spite of a .041 slower reaction time, and I beat him down the track by a total of 2.1 seconds including his better RT: members.aol.com/aurora402002/dragstrip/3rdrun.mpgAnd here is my last run of the day. I ran a 15.00 this run. Watch me hole-shot this guy big time. He ran a 13.7, but only beat me to the end by .67 seconds: members.aol.com/aurora402002/dragstrip/4thrun.mpgOn both videos, I noticed it helps if I let them completely download, then play it, otherwise it was really choppy. They should play in-browser with Quicktime, or you can use Windows Media Player if you save them. Each one is about 3.0 MB.

Who else here has run their car for time? Here's ones that I am aware of: - 1997 Autobahn, airbox mod, K&N:
15.837 @ 87.99mph (musclecar97 from Edmunds, and previous top time holder)
- 1996 non-Autobahn, RSM intake, custom heat shield, 80mm TB:
R/T------1.321 60--------2.405 330------6.765 1/8------10.295 --mph---70.41 1000----13.289 1/4------15.858 --mph---87.20 (800WattAurora from Edmunds)
- 2002 4.0, K&N, Corsa, custom airbox heat shielding:
14.858 @ 92.23 mph
- 1995 Autobahn, chip, straight-pipe in place of cats, airbox mod, K&N, pretty sketchy on the details, not sure I'd count this one unless more detail was known: 14.9 @ ?? mph (some guy via PM)

She did awesome catching the announcer. However, it was hard to hear my car as I was in the far lane. There's one where I'm in the close lane, but all you hear is some dragster behind her in line rumbling loud as heck. It's a Sony 4MP digital camera.

Wow, dude's trash talking the track... I heard of it from a Callaway owner. Guy has a 1996 Grand Sport SuperNatural. He ran a 13.2 just a few weeks ago (similar weather). And that Grand Am and Miata didn't run impressive times, nor the 16 second Accord. Seemed the "downhill" only helped me... Actually, a guy with a Camaro SS was talking to me. He wondered what I was running as he had a relative with an Aurora. He was impressed at my time and was mentioning how he was running some of his worst times. He had done about a 13.3 so far that day.

For my 1998 non-Autobahn Aurora, here's my timeslip;
R/T - .505 60' - 2.514 1/8 - 10.261 @ 71.93mph 1/4 - 15.705 @ 89.91mph
too bad i had a full tank of gas and a trunk full of car audio stuff, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing.

Did he have the Corsa exhaust to? Yes, that's Taylor. He did not have the Corsa yet, and I'm 90% positive he did have the 80mm TB. He definitely had the cone and custom airbox shielding, and I'm pretty sure he did that stuff after the TB. Marc, do you feel up to a nice weekend visit to Cleveland? It's a nice city, they have the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the best orchestra in the world, a great lake, some excellent restaurants, and many other things to see. Plus, it isn't full of homeless moochers and the traffic is never very bad. Corsa is right outside Cleveland, and they'd probably install it for you. They fixed the cat-connector on mine for free, and adjusted the tips a bit for me. Plus gave me a tour. Nice people, nice place, and a great product. Also, isn't the paint flaking off your stock mufflers? Who knows how dangerous that might be, and it probably costs thousands to repaint...

aurora40, is this the Corsa STS system you were talking about that they modified for free? how much modifications and how much time would it take to modify that STS system to fit my aurora V8 approx would you think? For the 2001+, it doesn't really have to be modified. I believe they possibly shorten a pipe, and you cut off closer to the cat. For the classic, the Y-pipe has to be modified in length a bit. But yes, they did it for free. It was sort of a one-time thing, they were hoping to sell 5-20 of them. Many owners expressed interest (on GMForums, actually), but when it came time, only two of us put the money down. However, if the car was there, I'm sure they'd do it again, they just probably wouldn't do it and then ship the system as they did for me. I was able to install it myself, though I went to Corsa as the pipe sagged a tad at the cat and I was in Cleveland anyway.
