4.42L?

Hello all, I'm just dreaming again, and I'm wondering if it would be possible to bore and stroke the 4.0L to get to 4.42L. In my mind it would be fun to acknowledge Oldsmobile's best known muscle car in this way. By my calculations, one way to get there would be with 89mm bore x 89mm stroke, versus the stock 87mm x 84mm. Does anyone know if that's possible? Ken

I'm not positive, but I don't believe there is a lot of room to stroke the engine. Also, you'd have to bore the cylinder liners, which may or may not have that much room. I don't know if the liners are as big overall as the 4.6L liners, just bored less, or if they are actually smaller. Seems like a lot of trouble just for the number 4.42. The 442's never had a 4.42L motor, nor 442ci motors. The 4-4-2 stood for various things, like 4-barrel, 4-speed, dual exaust initially.

You could probably build up the stoke by having a custom crankshaft made. This would be a VERY expensive project. I really don't know whether or not you could bore out this engine. The cylinders have cast iron sleeves that are set into the block during manufacturing. I don't know whether or not they could be bored. I looked in the 2001 factory manual about this. It doesn't mention anything about boring as part of an overhaul. ________________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!!

Far as I can tell, the cylinders can't be overbored on account of those liners. (http://www.babcox.com/editorial/us/us100232.htm) There isn't much at all that you can reman on these engines. In any case, 4.42 is just 0.18L away from a regular Northstar...

Thanks all, for your comments. I'm persuaded that I'll have to look elsewhere on my Aurora if I want to tinker with perfection.

Thanks all, for your comments. I'm persuaded that I'll have to look elsewhere on my Aurora if I want to tinker with perfection. You could hook up a 44.2hp shot of nitrous, or 4.42 psi of blower boost...
