Had my first street race today. It really wasn't a worthy competitor, but it was one none the less. I had just taken a date to a movie theatre and at the first light after the theatre a kid blasting his music so loud my rear view mirror was vibrating was staring at my car. He kept making eyes at the girl that was with me. He was driving around a 1994ish Lumina Z34. I yelled at him, " yo man, turn that crap down. While you're at it, stop making eyes at my girl too!" He said "how abouts you get in my car pretty lady." Her responce was "no thanks." "alright, eat my dust man." He guns it when the light turns green. I wasn't expecting it but I wasn't going to let this punk with his hat on backwards think he was gonna beat me. lol. he turns his turn signal on like he wants to merge into my lane (siiike) and I gun it and blow by him. His car didn't seem to put up much of a fight even though the engine was screaming. 1st kill for me. i had an adrenaline rush going for about half an hour afterwards too. lol. I think that street racing is juvenile but just something about this kid pushed my buttons.

Woman dies after street-racing accident
WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg woman who was badly hurt during an alleged illegal street race Sunday night has died.
Police say three cars were travelling side-by-side west on Portage Avenue from Moray Street Sunday night. As the cars approached Wallasey Street, the driver of one of the vehicles lost control.
His Camaro collided with Linda Rudnicki's car as she tried to make a left turn.
Rudnicki, 39, was taken to hospital in critical condition, but died on Monday.
Two 22-year-old drivers face a variety of charges in connection with the accident. The Camaro driver was charged Monday with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The other man arrested has been charged with racing with another vehicle, an offence under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police are still trying to find the driver of a third car, described as a dark coloured, late-model Ford Mustang with white racing stripes. Police say it had a loud muffler and no rear spoiler.
Winnipeg residents who live near Portage Avenue have long complained about the danger posed by street racers. Last year, the provincial government introduced a law that would let police seize cars used in street races and impound them for 48 hours.
Last year, six cars were seized; another five have been seized so far this year.
Hate to be a wet blanket but this is the kind of thing that causes me to abhor street races.
No insult or disrespect to you or your experience.

believe me, i'm against street racing too. I never even went over 40 MPH and the speed limit was 45. I think if you asked anybody here you'd see how much I've preached against street racing.

You should have just looked at his car with a disapproving expression on your face and said "What's the matter buddy, never heard of waxing your car?" Good work smoking a similar sized/power motor in a lighter car. I still think Z34's are cool, though.

All my races are done on the highway (or long onramps).. mostly late at night, around 11pm to midnight or later.. and all in good weather only. I'd say they're incredibly safe, and very fun, too.. nothing like hitting 110mph with someone right beside you

Ok, here I go off again. Warning. Ref. the well considered post by madmatt. The kid lost control of the vehicle. The police have been advised of this situation at this locality well in advance and often. They have confiscated five cars this year. None of this has stopped kids racing cars, nor is it likely to. Why don't we make kids pass high performance driving school before they can drive? Hunters safety courses don't make young hunters more dangerous with guns in the woods. Sex education doesn't create more pregnancies. Performance driving skills will make kids safer behind the wheel. Nothing crazy or too expensive. A standardized class and then they have to beat an elaplsed time around an easy parking lot autocross.

that may have no effect whatsoever on some people bud../ nothing or nobody will stop me from driving fast. I will have to stop myself and that will not be anytime soon. I am very alert, very concious of other motorists and direct 100% attention to the road and surroundings. Periodically check all mirrors and expect the worst. If i sense any kind of danger, i slow down. Been going 60mph lately cause the cops are enforcing it now 2 of my friends were pulled for going 68 IN A 55. So gay....and i wont have any of it. I have not even scratched my car, even when first learning how to drive. How many kids can say that around here....not too many. Couple of my friends totalled their cars the first week they had them. I care too much about my car to let that happen.

I think the main point here is that these big "deadly" street races like the one madmatt posted, comes from organized races where there's 3 or more cars going well over 100mph. I've been to a few in Miami that where a blast. No one got hurt nor did the fuzz show (pre-aurora days). Everyone who's posted had mentioned they do not do stupid things like weave in and out off traffic and drive "recklessly."
This was just a bit of an ego thing and shouldn't be taken as much more.

I wasn't saying for slowing down, you're right, as long as we let kids drive they will test the limits. So lets hand out the prophylactics at school and train them to handle it.

Sounds like a good idea to me... except I just remembered, all 16-year olds are automatically professional performance drivers as soon as they get their license! Duh! The argument that "I am a conscious and safe excessive speeder & street racer" is ludicrous. That's like saying "I like to randomly shoot a gun in the air, but I do it very carefully and with respect to those around me." The bullets have to come down somewhere, and they *will* hit something. Just like you and your car. Most people who crash (myself included) never see it coming, and it's impossible to consciously prevent something your brain isn't even considering.

Well, I cant say accidents arent going to happen, thats why they are "accidents". Never said i was anything "professional" either...hmm. I do not like to be consiered a street racer either, that isnt why i bought this car...ffs. I just try my hardest to stay out of accidents...thats all.

i almost had my first street race yesterday. i was comming home from work. i stopped at a light beside a stupid modified civic hatchback. it had nice rims and a big exhaust, but i doubt anything else. i looked at the guy, lined up. he looked at me. when the lights turned green i gunned it.
my wheels spun under the enormous force generated by the v8. traction control turned on right away. it had rained really hard about 1 hour ago and the roads were just drying up. despite how much my wheels were slipping, my head was gently pushed back into my seat as i accelerated. i looked in my mirror, the honda civic was barley moving. maybe he had raced an aurora before and knew what he woulda got. so much excitement, so much dissapointment.

What the hell is going on out there that they don't pull you over for 10 over? The cops around here (in the state of Iowa) have been know to jack you at 5 over -- and they will continue to.

No i wasnt complaining at that. They should invest in a radar detector for one. But I am just careful and pick good spots to open er up. If they jacked me for going 5 over I would still take them to court and fight it.

I'll complain about a cop giving a ticket out for going 68 in a 55 zone, its ridiculous, cops are almost never there when you need them but there always ready to give a ticket out to a person who is speeding. And its usually someone who doesn't normally speed but just happend to go a little fast by accident, and mean while there's some drunk, driving home wasted out of his mind, swerving all over the road driving over 8 foot wide median strips with huge bushes and then into someone's front yard and what happens, they just back up and head home and where are the cops, nowhere to be seen.

Wow yuhatn, that sounds like Ohio. Getting tagged for 68 in a 55 around here (Steven's area) is right on the borderline. If it's a high accident or "targeted enforcement" area, or the driver is young, you'll get the stop. With a grey head and an Aurora, I go right through at 68 many times. The NJ side of the river is a bit tougher than the PA side, but if you watch your spots, you can get away with a lot (knocking on wood).

Bucanneers i agree with you on that post in its entirety. There are drug deals over here every day (i don't mind weed, i think it should be legal, but the crack and cocaine deals over here gotta go). Everytime i drive through this 1 area, you see these big black guys (no offense) handing over a few 20's and in comes a baggie to their other hand and right into the shirt breast pocket it goes, like it never happened.
Not only that but like you said there are drunks all the time and the cops sit over here and eat donuts and coffee (Wawa is their favorite spot). Also they hung out with us again over at our Wendys meet. I got fresh with them once, and they said you better watch your mouth son..lol. We never do anything wrong. All we do is talk about cars and girls and eat food, then go cruise. Thats it usually. They only come cause they hear a bunch of T/As followed by Ricers with loud ass exhausts.

My brother and i were racing today, he drives a 2001 Ford F-350 with the 7.3 TurboDiesel. after calling my car a "toilet" and saying he could whoop my car in a race, i told him to prove it, heh. he's been getting some confidence that his truck is fast since 3 days ago i installed a performance module in it and set it to the 100hp setting and i also installed a cold air intake on it. well back to the racing part. we lined up at a stop light that leads to the freeway, i wasn't sure if he'd actually race so when it turned green i heard his tires squelling, so i punched it, all the way up to my speed limiter ;D. he was ahead in the beginning by only a half a car length since i had a delay in the start but i slowly passed him and by about 100mph i was 1 1/2 carlengths ahead of him, and i also had two passangers heh. then he started making excuses, lol, it was funny. i just had to knock his confidence back down a peg

I think it's funny that people will b*tch and complain when they get a ticket for going 10 over but who's fault is it? It's your own fault you're speeding. You're getting mad at a police officer to doing his job and giving you a ticket when you're clearly in the wrong? Why don't you stop blaming everyone else for your mistakes and be a man and deal with it. You do something wrong, you pay the consequences. Just why do you think that police are never busting people selling drugs, murdering, etc? Just because you don't see it first hand it doesn't mean they're not doing it. You may think you're not endangering anyone by speeding all the time but you must realize that even at 55 MPH if you were in an accident there's a good chance you'd be killed even in your Aurora. For every 10 MPH you're gonig over that, you increase that chance that much more. Is it really worth it to save just a minute or two? I think not..

I may speed but when I get caught I know its my fault. hey though, ever think of taking that approach to it? maybe showing some courtesy will help you out. on every ticket ive ever gotten ive been knocked down on the speed/fine/violation cause ive shown respect for a man in uniform doing his job
