Well check it out guys the other day i was cleaning my airhog filter that wasn't too dirty, but it's been about 6k miles since i've put it in. while i was waiting around for the filter to dry out and such i decided to clean out the TB and removed the MAF only to get to the TB. i was checking it out and it looked pretty righteous except i couldn't get that stupid screen completely clean. I was using this valvoline synthetic carb and TB cleaner on it (it works awesome!!)and looking through in the sun i saw where the lil filament for the sensor was so I ripped the screen off to get a better look. I bet some of you guys are probably thinking what an idiot right? Well i found out there was two filaments, one behind the other and a lil higher up. so i sprayed those suckers directly and the carbonization was blasted clean off those filaments. That screen was blocking the spray from getting in there pretty good from the first time i drenched it (just imagine what it was doing to incoming air ). so i put everything back together and take it for a test drive. and i wasn't exactly thrilled with the results, but i liked what was going on.
I definitely liked the stronger pull from 40mp-90mph. that was possibly the only gain i could tell from the butt dyno. Now the other gain i got was .6mpg increase. now you might not think much of it but i was gettin 19.2mpg tops and driving conservatively like a grandpa mixed city/hwy. So going to 19.8mpg with a bit more pedal to the metal action going on is a great increase for me at least cause now i get to drive more aggressively. I'm getting better mpg flooring it more now than i did before and not flooring it. on the hwy with steady pressure on the pedal i'm getting at least a median 40mpg inst. I think i read about someone else doing this to their MAF sensor but they never posted any results. I haven't thrown any codes in the 300 miles i've driven it like this and all is well. I would recommend others to try it out. and also buy some good carb cleaner to get at those sensors once you pull off the screen, i'm sure that was the most significant factor in the boost in power (the screen just got in the way of a thorough cleaning and possibly more airflow blockage to the filaments).
I know a lot of you guys were against the removal of the screen, cause supposedly it straightened out the airlow for the sensor. I found that the sensor has a scoop molded into it that channels air to it so straightening airflow i believe has nothing to do with it's proper operation. SOoOoooo if you guys wanna flame me on this it's cool, but you have to try it to believe it, unless of course it makes sense to you as i put it.
