It's possible that this has happened somewhere. But no mention of that has ever turned up here.

I don't know of anyone who has but the 2nd gen is quite a bit faster than the classic because of the huge difference in weight. Even the V6 Aurora is similar to the non-autobahn Classics in speed.

What's the weight difference?

The 2nd gen 4.0 is 165 lbs lighter than the Classic 4.0.

Well, that's not that huge of a dif, not even a full grown man's weight.

The V6 is 400 pounds lighter. The classic is right under 4,000. The V6 Aurora is 3,600.

There wasn't anywhere to really line them up at Carlisle. But Letitroll kept up with me when he was behind me and we opened them up. I think he was spraying, though...

LOL! Bob was kidding bud, he doesnt have nitrous.
Put it this way, Bob has put up 14.86 @ 92.23mph. Its possible, but I have yet to see a Classic put up those kinds of numbers.
When I drove Bruces' 02 4.0, it felt more nimble and noticeably lighter, it was felt tighter where the Classic could have been considered sloppy..probably due to the upgraded suspension, I'm sure my car could hang with a 2nd Gen....but the only reason a Classic would be faster evantually...is due to the 140 mph limiter, the 2nd Gen is limited at 128mph.

LOL! Bob was kidding bud, he doesnt have nitrous. Hahaha!! Yeah I was kidding about the nitrous. I just wanted to get a rise out of Dan, but I guess he's too busy to read the forums today. I think ultimately they are both big comfortable sedans with good power, and it really comes down to which style you prefer. I don't think there is any significant performance difference no matter how you slice it. Both (or all three, if you want to count the two flavors of 2nd gen as different cars) will feel good when you put the pedal down, and that's all that really matters.

And make sure that gas tank is LOW! yeah i won't make that mistake again, im going to take my subs out and all that too. i'm goina see if i can fix that misfire too, my friend thinks that the shop gave me a bad coilpack when they replaced the old one. Bob when you had that time at the track, was that when your Aurora was stock? the thing that sucks too, it's goina be 95 degrees for temperature, so i'm sure my time won't be that good but oh well. we'll see what this intake and exhaust will let my Aurora do.

Bob when you had that time at the track, was that when your Aurora was stock? No, my car was exactly as it is today. Corsa, K&N panel filter, and the airbox wrap. I am still thinking about some cold-air ducting even though it's no where close to the fast car in the garage now... I also keep looking and thinking that cross-over pipe could be removed without dropping anything else. I think it unbolts on both sides and there is a plate in the way that can be removed. I wonder how much an extrude-hone on that would help? I should have some times for the ZR-1 sometime next week. It is basically all stock except for some cosmetic enhancements. It may or may not remain stock, it's a question I keep grappling with. It's kinda cool that it's stock, but there is a lot of potential left in the car, especially from the exhaust system which strangles it over 6,500 rpm.

The biggest difference between Classic and 2nd Gen V8's is off the line. Aurora40's would walk away from me 0-30 when we both just stomped on the pedal. If I dropped it into second with a touch of brake torque, I could just barely match him in the low end when he was ready, and overtake him when he reacted to my move.
At higher speeds they are very similar. The 2nd Gen engine spools up faster because of the modified internals reducing frictional losses, so it feels faster. But in absolute terms there is not all that much difference above 50 mph. I see about a 1/2 second difference in the cars, mostly coming off the hole shot.
Yes, Aurora40 didn't get a rise out of me because I've been busy painting the bedroom. The puter is in here so I just left it disconnected for what was supposed to be one day. Several extra little projects later we are back in business. I love women, they give meaning to our lives. (I have to write this fifty times on the blackboard to keep from...well...doing or saying something unfortunate)

Hey Jim, you up to a run one of these days to see if a slightly modded Classic can take out a 2nd Gen 4.0?? I normally don't condone street racing but there is honour at stake here and the scientific demand for knowledge.

Let's set up for another Friday night. I'll poke around the country roads near my place to see where we can line'em up. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds good Bruce.
If I can make some predictions. I think the 2nd gen has a greater advantage over a car like mine. Even with my modifications, the 2nd Gen 4.0 feels lighter and quicker off the line, not to mention the factory improvements to the 4.0 engine.
Either way, it'll be good to see what happens.

Ha! Don't let the 2nd gen trouble you. They're only 140 lbs lighter. Just add a couple concrete bags to their car!
