Mostly for the sound. However, I have been looking into them recently. Here is the one I've been looking at: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9ATCQVP00B5666It is a Magnaflow Universal cat. 2.5" inlet & outlet. Also, funny that the cheapest I found the converter was from the website I purchase my computer parts from. $50 is great, I think I'm going to order it just because. :X

Not sure if I ever posted this. However, I got some nice tips (2.5" inlet, 3.5" outlet, 18 inch long) that I put on. Here's a picture.

I've always thought about getting a high flow cat but straights are so much cheaper haha. Maybe once I have a cutout it'll make the stock setup sound better.

I currently have straights, I'm trying to decide if I want to get a high flow cat or not. They're fairly cheap..

the only reason i want one is to get back closer towards a factory setup. i believe my PCM doesn't know what to do with my current setup. i am going through one thing at a time trying to cure the 5-6 year problem of the car dying and not wanting to start right up again.
i switched back to the oem air box and though i am convinced the short ram was never my problem. it doesnt hurt anything. i still have a screen less MAF and will be leaving that alone. i figured if the PCM was getting accurate CO2 readings that it might run better. at least it would idle smoother. like it is , it constantly fluctuates up and down 100-250 rpm because it sees the cat readings and is always changing spark and fuel levels to adjust.
i guess i have succumbed to the situation. a few extra hp or a car that runs right. i'll trade 6 hp for a car that runs good. a long time ago i was under the impression that a performance intake and exhaust would really make a big difference in performance since any changes like these are usually more noticeable on a v8 than other cylinder numbered motors, however it's such a small displacement that the effects are minimal. it's not like back in the day on my buddies old '79 T/A with the 400 small block that literally came alive with a cat back system and larger breather.
my car runs way too rich and over time i fear it may wash out the cylinders if i keep driving it this way.

It's intermittent.. I don't think I'd be looking at exhaust, although emissions could be the cause.
You've mentioned several times you had a chaffed wiring harness somewhere. Did you ever fix it? Have you checked the PCM grounds or all the main grounds for that matter?
How do you know you are running rich? Smell, gas mileage, spark plug color, fuel trim readings?
The fluctuation of RPM can indicate many things... vacuum leak, bad coils, etc. No codes are being thrown?

Before Aurora40 states it.. I think you should make a separate thread lance.
Also, I've had the issue with the car dying and not starting up immediately afterwards once or twice.. but it also did it under stock conditions. Since then I've replaced the fuel pressure regulator and I haven't had it happen since.
Anyways - I'm going to the drag strip tomorrow, I might run the Aurora there, not sure yet. Hoping for a 15s quarter mile. I'll post the timeslip if I do go!

Ok, well lets see if I can remember everything. I had a professional cat-back installation done last September/October time frame. I had 2.5" pipe installed, removed the resonator, and installed two single chamber super 40's. Now this is an incredibly loud muffler inside the vehicle. I like the rumble and it keeps the wife from driving my car. Super 40's are rarely used anymore, most people have Delta 44's or dual stage 40 series which don't quite offer the same rumble you get from single chambers. My Rockford 12 is drowned out between 2500-3200 RPM depending on how loud I have the system turned up. It's what I like though, here is a pic!

Has anyone just replaced the resonater with a straight pipe. Im curious how much the noise changed. I really dig my nice quiet sound but would be willing to give up some of that for a nice rumble under throttle.

Replacing the resonator with a straight pipe will have very little effect on the sound.
When I had the stock setup (muffler delete, 1.75" piping from the Y back) I had the resonator removed and replaced with pipe. Only thing I noticed was that it popped a lot. The next day I had a glasspack put there, and that got rid of the popping. As far as more noise goes, I can't honestly say it made a difference, as the resonator is literally a straight through design already..
