Hey All,
What about tire upgrades on a ’98 w/ autobahn pack? It seems to me that the car is way under tired for the weight. Very easy to put into a four-wheel drift, even when the maneuver is unintentional. Tires squeal around every corner. I’m currently wearing out the lowball Goodyear H rated passenger tires that the former owner placed on here as fast as humanly possible.
For OEM size replacement the Yokohama Avid V4S 235-60-VR-16 seems like a good bet, what have you guys found? The Pirelli P6 Four Seasons is a possibility, but I’ve never had luck with Pirelli. I’d like to jump up to 255-55-16, but all that seems to be available are truck tires, anybody see anything else around?
As for going plus 1, the 255-50-17 size is available with Bridgestone Potenza RE750, Kumho ECSTA Supra 712, BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS, Continental Conti Extreme Contact, or Kumho Ecsta ASX. Albeit we have to include the cost of new wheels in the mix, not something I really want to do just now.
So the question is do you see a significant improvement in moving up to a high performance tire in OEM size, or do you really need to go Plus one for the handling to snap into place? Oh yeah, like the signature says, I drive it like I stole it.

I looked at the Yokos too, but could not justify the cost right now since all 4 of my tires still have tread left. From what I hear and have read, the Yokos are a good tire......and the price is not to shabby.......about the plus one...........I don't know about that since I have not had experience with them.

I would think that some of your drifting problem might be the type of tires you have, rather than just the size. I know some people don't like the V rated Michelin's that came with the autobahn, but I've never had traction problems on corners. Of course, maybe I don't drive as hard as you, but I have been known to break the speed limit occasionally

My baby sticks to the road darn well. It's the most stable car in a corner I've owned yet. (Nicest cornering car I've driven is my friend's old BMW 530.)

I'd also have to say that the problem is not necessarily the size... I recently replaced my stockers with Bridgestone Turanza LS-H's and am quite impressed thus far. Very quiet, smooth, and responsive tire. I even went down from the V-rated to an H-rated tire (for price purposes), but I don't plan on testing the 132mph speed rating anytime soon anyway.

Man, it's weird to think about a 255/55-16 on the Aurora. My Corvette had 255/50-16's, and they were wide as heck. Though, a 9.5" wide rim has a tendancy to make them seem wider.
A 235 is not a narrow tire. Wider might help, but I'd bet you can get pretty good grip from a sportier 235.

Thanks Guys, I'm gonna roll with the majority here and go for the upgraded OEM 235/60/16 size, with the Yokos in the lead for replacements. 255/55/16’s aren't going to fit well on stock rims and would probably mess up handling more than help. Like Aurora40 notes, about 9.5” would be required and then you might as well go with at least a plus one. Now can someone tell me how to wear down Goodyear Integrity’s? The only, and I mean only, benefit these tires have are their incredibly long tread life. (Yes, I’ve tried running them back and forth to Carolina, Virginia, et al. And I try to abuse them locally too, nothing works!) And like, whoa! Javidogg! Dude, 20’s on an Aurora? Aren’t they just for rice burners? Or Escalades? Just kidding, I’m sure they look truly awesum! I’ve just scanned some of the mods you run on the other threads, but I haven’t seen if you’ve modified springs and dampers to handle the extra unsprung weight? Scottydl, I’m glad you’ve had good luck with your Bridgestone’s. But I have this unreasonable abhorrence of anything with a Firestone affiliation. Lots of friends with good opinions of Bridge’s as well, just my nutty prejudices. Best wishes with yours. A little off topic, but I got my K&N air filter installed without the airbox mod. Don’t see any real need without exhaust, throttlebody, and ignition system upgrades. Easily seems to run about the same increase in speed and pickup as when I wash it. But you do get that nice decal. Installing the new Magnecor 7mm ignition wires tomorrow. Another nice decal, but I had a bad wire on #1 cylinder, so what the hey. Always pays to run the best quality parts, they only run a little more in disposable income terms. I let you know how the mini mods work out before and after washing the car. (Everyone knows that your car runs MUCH faster after washing, right? Lower wind resistance or something)

Scottydl, I’m glad you’ve had good luck with your Bridgestone’s. But I have this unreasonable abhorrence of anything with a Firestone affiliation. FWIW, most Bridgestone/Firestone tires are made at completely different factories depending upon whether they are manufactured for cars, trucks, or farming equipment... and the truck tires were the ones that were failing a few years ago. Plus I think Firestone got a bad rep for some tire failures that weren't all their fault... mass media hype will do that. Plus my next door neighbor works for the company, so he got me a pretty sweet deal on my Turanza's.

I have had the yokohama avid v4s for the last 20,000 miles and liked them better than the oem Michelin V rated tires from the autobahn package. I ordered them from the Tire Rack at a great savings.

Thanks FLaurora. I ordered my last set of tires (hugh 275/16s Kumhos for my truck) from Tire Rack and was well satisfied with price and delivery. It's so hard to judge tires as you don't get a test drive B4 purchase, but their recommendation was everything promised.
Did you buy as per their recommendation, or because that's about all that they have in V rated 235/16? The Yokos are rated A for wear, how are yours lasting treadwise? Also hope you're safe and sound down there, its WINNNDYYYY!

The Kumhos are a great handling tire with a very nice build quality at a super price. However you trade low tread life for this. When you jump up in price you're trying to get the extra tread life while maintaining a responsive feel. Unfortunately a higher price and an "A" tread wear doesn't guarentee quality ride or handling. Therefore because you can't test drive tires, you get all these posts on recommended tires. Thnx again for the continued response here guys.

Yeah, I really like my Kuhmos (Exsta STX) and couldn't have been happier. I would buy them again with no regrets, but I'm getting reports that the Yokos are just as good in ride and handling and come with a longer tread life for only a small increase in price.
I've had my ups and downs with Michelins. Never a poor tire, but didn't felt like I got the value for the massive price. Almost too much engineering trying to meet or beat every criteria, never excelling in any one.

I got them at discounttiredirect.com at $63 ea. with free shipping - did not have a chance to put them on yet but my mother had them or her Altima for about a year or so. Low noise and great wet handling, especilall slush/snow. For the price these tires cannot be beat.

I installed Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires to replace my factory Goodyear RSA's and have had them for 11 months and about 12K miles. They were a massive improvement in both handling and ride. The best part is the rain qualities. I live in the Pacific Northwest and these are the best rain tires that I have ever driven. The tires never even slip when you floor it at a light during a rainstorm. After nearly a year I have no noticeable wear and also like the bead on the sidewall that protects the rim from curbs, etc.

Thanks for the input kmiles. You should go to the introductions section and fill us in. Anyway, as stated before, I've never had a bad experience with Michelins, they have always been at the worst a good tire and at best one of my favs. I had Pilots (can't remember which one) and they were really great. Sold the car with them on there. My only problem is that they charge so much money for them! I'm always the ultimate cheapskate (my handle on the audio boards), but would always consider a Michelin.
Now if I can just wear down these crappy Goodyears!!!! These POS's last forever!! I should make a comercial for them, old people love tread wear. Maybe I can give them to my GF's dad. Geez!

My soon-to-be has 3 used Michelins and a Cooper on it, and I'm told has a slight vibration at low speeds (25-30) but not after you get past 30. It goes away then. Could this be the tires? Could it be that Cooper? Because he told me that he had two Coopers, from the same set, on there, and one turned out to be defective.
What do you guys think?

Absolutely it's a possibility that the tire is bulging or unevenly worn. Just don't expect a perfect ride the first time you get your tires done, that's all.

Check the tires for wear and replace accordingly. Because the vibration is directly related to speed it leads me to believe that it is a balancing issue. See if there is a force balancer. Read this thread for more info: Vibration at highway speeds
