I had a flat tire this morning and after I took it to the tire shop, the leak came from the most unexpected source! I made a post a few weeks ago about the chrome on my wheels pealing, and well, one of the peals of chrome sliced the valve stem of my tire! the guy at discount tire told me that all four of my wheels were doing the exact same thing and that there was a chance that while driving the chrome peels could cut into the valve stems causing a sudden flat tire and can cause an accident for that reason. I never expected the chrome of my wheels to be slicing my valve stems open. How ironic.

They snipped off the chrome peice that caused my tire to go flat, but here's a picture of what this looks like on another of my wheels.. They're getting dangerous to drive on at this point.

I would imagine an unexpected flat tire, but not really like blown tire, or all of a sudden no pressure thing. Only, really way I can think of an accident happeningl, is like on the highway doing 75+ and you slam on the brakes while sawing at the wheel type thing.

The OEM chrome wheels found on the gen 1 cars are still availiable from GM in Kit form, wheel-lug nuts-center cap. They are discontinued directly from GM, but are availiable through SEMAC, which is a GM authorized accessories warehouse. Part #12495442 and retails for $165, but i think most dealers would do better.

Buy a set of chrome valve stem "sleeves". They just slip on over the stem. Should fix the problem without having to dismount and rebalance all of the tires.

Wow - that's insane! I've never heard of or seen anything like this before.
It is common around here to see aluminum wheels with nasty corrosion on them, esp. around the wheel weights. <--- This is why when I buy new tires I always ask if the shop can use stick-on weights instead of those big 'ol snap-on things that sit on the outer edge of the rim.
For anybody who lives where road salt is used in the winter (and I assume it is where you're at Custom88)...check your wheels often and touch up any nicks, scratches, etc. with clearcoat touch up paint. Scratches can break through the protective clearcoat, and salt + unprotected alloy wheels = nasty corrosion. A bad plating job could very well have caused this, but watch out for scratches too.

the chrome peeling is VERY common on all gm chrome wheels that are in the elements, i thinks it's mainly from moisture and the metal counteract with each other. i see this all the time in the tire business.

Yup, moisture and salt have a way of damaging chrome!

SEMAC or Southeastern Michigan Accessory Center www.semac.us is my local GM authorized accessory supplier. They're who I call when i'm looking for a deal on GM Accessories. I don't know if you can order direct from them. The wheels i mentioned earlier were new old stock, and i think the price was cheap because they wanted to get rid of them. PM me if you want me to check to see if I can still get them.
