All this talk of snow and ice and made me consider getting snow tires. Does anyone run them? Do they make much of a difference? How much mileage/how many winters can you run?

I could never handle all the nose they make. It would sound like your in a 4x4. No thanks.

Snow tires are great if you have that kind of weather often. It becomes a pain to swap them on and off all the time so unless your climate prompts the need, your better off getting all season.

I'm in Minneapolis which isn't a snowy tundra but it does certainly get ice and snow.

Dedicated winter tires will always be recommended over all season tires. Different compounds, additional tread siping etc. I've found with my Kumho KW11, the noise difference is minimal. I guess it depends on the tire.

I'm not so concerned about the noise. The Jeep I had before had aggressive, off-road tires on it so i'm used to tire slap

I feel the need to resurrect this one.
We got hit with our first real blast of winter last night/today. 10mm of freezing rain, sleet, ice pellets and an additional 5cm of snow. I must say, my first real test of the winter tires and they performed better then I could have ever expected. Despite icy conditions, TC and ABS never came on. It was fantastic.
A combination of responsible motoring and a proper winter tire and you've got a safe combination for successful winter driving!

I haven't used snow tires ever since all season tires appeared. Between the TC and FWD, my 2001 has excellent traction in snow. And that 1972 442 that I had before my Aurora had a good tight limited slip diff, Air Lifts, and all season tires. No problem there, either.

I figure those kinds of features are in place so that they don't have to be used, much like an airbag, if TC and ABS are engaged, you've done something wrong. If winter tires allow me to drive as I usually do in the winter and life safety equipment does not engage, all is well.
These Kumho's are 100x better then the terrible Michelin Energys I had.
