I was looking into getting some 18" for the aurora but I was wondering if anybody has put a 255 tire on a 7.5" rim. Some of the sites say to put it on a 8". The main reason why I ask is because a 255/45/18 rolls more like the stock tire than a 245/45/18? Also does it rub at all with this big tire?
thanks for the help.

255's are ok for most 7.5" rims and I don't believe anyone has experienced any rubbing issues with that width

I had 245's on my 17x7's, although that was pushing it. Sidewall height can effect the width a little bit too, so be careful. I'm pretty sure a 255/45/18 would work well on a 18x7.5 rim though.

Will 255 tires fit on the stock 16" 2nd gen 3.5L rims? How wide are these rims?

Will 255 tires fit on the stock 16" 2nd gen 3.5L rims? How wide are these rims? I dont think it will, I think the stock rim is 6.5, although not completely sure. I know a guy that has stock 16's on a 94 STS, and 255's although that may be a 7 or 7.5 inch rim. My stock bonne rims were 6.5 and I believe the stock 1st gen are 6.5. Even if 255 were to fit, I dont think it would fit RIGHT. On my 17's, I broke belts in every tire, even though the tires width (255/50) was said to fit a 17"x7" rim. The tires bulged out the side too much, and was very mushy in the turns.

Actually just looked up the wheel on ebay, it's 16x7" (item # 180086305187). According to another auction, the 1994 STS stock 16" wheels are also 7" width... (item # 170078592278).
So I guess if you broke 255s (unfortunate!!) with a 7" wheel, I'd probably need 7.5" - but then how do they fit on the STS 7"?

No rub with my 255/45/18's (8" rim). 255/45's have just as popular tire selection as 245/45's so why not get the proper height?
You could do a 255 for a 16" rim, but there aren't any tires in 255/55/16 (all trucks). 255/50 is an inch off overall diameter.

255/50/16 is only 0.6" off (2.2% too fast), stock (2nd gen 3.5L) is 225/60/16 right?
Seem to be some tires in this category, but how can I prove that they'd fit a 7" rim?

Contact a couple different tire places, tirerack.com, Tire Kingdom, etc. Also, Jim has 255's, I'm not sure if his wheels are 7" or 7.5"

Jim's are 7.5" (ebay 230091363340), so in answer to the original question, yes, you can put 255 tires on a 7.5" rim, Jim has had them for awhile.
But as for 16"/7" wide rims... I'll ask around, but salesmen tend to stay to the safe side, and not recommend anything other than factory equipment. So I'm looking more for someone with experience I guess...

Mac, you should consult the manufacturer for whatever tire you are considering. Not all tires of the same size have the same recommended rim width.
The 255/50-16 was used on '84 to some '88 Corvettes, so there should be some decent selection of tires in that range. They had 8.5-9.5" wide rims though. I actually had a hard time finding tires that were suitable for 9.5" wide rims in that size, most were only rated to 9"
However, I suspect you can find tires that would be ok. Here are some:
Dunlop SP Sport 8000 255/50-16 recommended rim width: 6.5-10" BFGoodrich g-Force Sport: 7"-9"
