Well, my high school graduation is coming soon and my buddies and I want a way to celebrate. We all met on the first few weeks of High school so we have been through all High School together and have taken many trips to many places, but now we wanna do it big.
I am getting closer and closer to completing my Cadillac project, rebuilding the engine right now. When Summer comes my buddy is going to help me finish and paint her, should be mostly done by Mid-Summer. After that we all want to take my Cadillac on the ultimate road trip, Route 66!
This is our first roadtrip of this size, the furthest we went before was Boise Idaho. What all should I do to my Caddy to make sure she lasts the journey? What kind of stuff should I carry for emergencies, and what other kind of stuff should I pack besides my clothes and food.
We want to start here in Salt Lake and go to California to begin from the start. Does anyone think we should just start from Salt Lake or in Nevada? Of course starting from Salt Lake would take a whole day or two off the trip and quite possibly several hundred dollars, which we going in on together.
And, to the trip itself, what are some really good hot spots that you folks have found? I have heard of the Muscle Car ranch, the Big Texan, and that one restaurant with the 72 ounce steak for free (if you can eat it all), and then, ... of course... The Cadillac Ranch!!!
What are some other things I should be thinking about before this road trip? And about how much would it cost, spending one night in at least three hotels spanning about five days (spending the rest in the car...) on the way, and then 3 nights in hotels on the way back and driving night and day for the last leg of the journey.
Edit - We were thinking about going earlier in the Summer and taking my Aurora and getting a trailer hitch and getting a small pull-along camper that my friend has. We would take his Jeep, but it is pretty unreliable. We want to take my Aurora so we can go sooner, and because it's a cool car and will likely turn heads, not as much as the Cadillac, but still. Although the trip won't be as cool as it would be with the Caddy, I can use some of the money I would have put to get the Caddy finished sooner into the trip, which would make it much more enjoyable for financial reasons.
Of course there is the issue of my Aurora pulling a trailer (God forbid!, even I said it looked corny, tables have turned). I don't know how big the trailer is we are pulling, but I think it is around 800-1000 pounds, it's just one of those camper things that you lift the roof up and fold out a tent thing, I dunno what the proper term is, I don't think this will be too much of an Issue for the Aurora, especially after a fresh trans flush, oil flush, and coolant flush.
Ah, decisions decisions. We have until mid-May to have the plans finalized...
