I went on an 800 mile roadtrip with a friend this past weekend. Went from Boston to Saratoga Springs, NY (Skidmore College), and up to Montreal (drinking age = 18!!), and back. Managed good time. Got my second speeding ticket. I'm only 19... I never have any idea that I'm speeding, unless I mean to, in this car. Maybe I'm just absent minded (well, I am, but I mean about this), or maybe the car is just too smooth. I'm used to a car that lets me know when it's going too fast. The Aurora does this -- at 110mph+ when the wind noise starts to get noticable... It's a smooth, quiet, luxury car, and even with my wimpy V6, it gets up and goes. The DOHC is a charm because the faster you go, the more power it has. Sigh. No more Aurora for me. I'm handing it over, mostly voluntarily, to my father back at home, and dropping myself off insurance (which will be rediculous once the second ticket goes through). It probably won't be sold, but it certainly won't be mine anymore.. I don't need a car at college anyway (I live on campus and everything), and this summer I'll use a trusty 1994 Corsica that I used last summer for about a month when I lost the keys to the Aurora The Corsica has a 3 speed transmission, brakes that barely work, and a growling loud V6 that lets me know when it's being pushed too hard (about 75mph+). Perfect for the teenage driver like me who can't stop speeding . And a perfect price - my mother found it for $300, and it passes inspection without a problem. So no worries about like, anything. So I guess this is goodbye! I like the forum so maybe I'll post this and that every once and awhile, but as of this weekend I no longer drive an Aurora...

You have to keep your eye on the speedometer in this car, 4.0 or 3.5. Keep posting even though you are no longer driving an Aurora.....for now.

Sad to see anyone go, but if you think you will be better off then I guess it's for the best. Best of luck in school. Next time you go into Canada maybe Jim can meet you for a beer

I've been distracted a few times and didn't notice how fast I was going either. Seems these cars are smoother the faster you go. lol. I seem to honestly get better gas mileage at faster speeds to. I kept 85 MPH steady for about 2 miles and reset my DIC when I got to 85 and averaged 35 MPG at 85 MPH.. pretty good for a full size car! It sucks you have to give up your Aurora though... that relaly sucks.

Yeah... cruise control's been broken since 63k when they replaced the engine. Just a little plastic part that broke, the dealer ordered it, and I forgot to pick it up. After two weeks, they send it back. That happened three times, and I forgot every time to pick it up before the two weeks... hehe. Anyway yeah, when I had cruise, I did not speed. And cruise works on this $300 Corsica in the case that I find myself pushing its 85mph or so top speed But I don't have to give it up really, I could keep it and pay high insurance. But the policy already went up just a couple days ago because of my first ticket (took two years to process!), and it already didn't make sense. Now it makes even less sense, as I don't need a car here anyway...

Sorry to hear the news but if the car stays in the family you may get it back someday.
About 2 months after I got my Aurora I was stopped for speeding - 55 in a 40. The officer asked me if I knew how fast I was going and I told him "yeh, once I saw your lights and looked down."
"I've had this thing 2 months and I don't think I'll ever get use to it" I said. He let me off with a warning.

good luck in school! too bad you're handing the car over...
I have to say this though, if you don't know that you are going 110mph+ then you shouldn't be driving a vehicle. That to me says that you have no control of what you are doing with the car and maybe that car is too powerful for you. That's just my .02

Heheh, I had a Chevy Celebrity like that Corsica. Fine car, always got me where I needed to go. But 3-speed auto and a wheezy motor. You didn't go over 65-70mph, because the car would start to shake rather violently. Not to mention you knew the 10" brake rotors and 195-14" tires weren't gonna stop you from any decent speed. Plus the speedo was pegged at 85mph.

yeah, i remember the drive home after i picked up my car, i HAD to put it on cruise otherwise i'd find myself doing 15-20 over easy. It was a big difference from my 120hp Ford Taurus i had before, heh. Now that i've gotten used to the power i can easily control myself, everyonce in a while though, i still find myself going too fast , but i suppose thats all it takes for the police.

Plus the speedo was pegged at 85mph. From the mid 1970s to the late 1980s, the government thought that 80 & 85 mph speedometers would work like governors. The government was obviously very wrong.

Yes... but... Both hold true. The car IS smoother at 90mph+. I can't explain it. And it's natural tendency to want to drive smoothly, especially on a trip where it's 250 miles to destination, taking one road, long and straight, without a single town in between... But yes, I'm getting rid of this car (in a way) because I realize that it's not safe for my driving style. Aurora40 hit it right on - the "shaking violently" is a great safety feature of this old Corsica - I never take it over 75mph Was the 85mph speedometer a government regulation? I always wondered why cars from this generation did that - even cars like the Delorian and whatnot.

My dad, being the crazy excessive speeder that he is, swears this is the best riding car he's ever owned. And trust me, he's owned quite a few cars. And with a 1,000,000+ miles under his belt, this is a guy's opinion that I take very highly with car comfort. You just can't compare any other car to these babies. Fast, smooth, and quiet. Everything one needs to enjoy an amazing ride on them desert roads.

The 85 mph speedo was a government regulation for a time in the 1980s. I searched around and found some mention of that. In a discussion at europeancarweb.com/tech/0401ec_6series/ about BMWs, "A silly federal law mandated an 85-mph speedometer, and BMW stuck a red LED clock in it for some reason."

lol, makes sense they'd have it at 85mph, as highways are now around 70mph speed limit you could mearly say you were going 85, even if you were going 110+, heh.

Wacko: haha she probably does, but who knows with women.
My old car (89 Grand Marquis) had the 85mph speedo....My friend and i got it to wrap all the way around back to 0 going down the highway....after that it never worked the same. haha

oooh, I had an 89 Town Car! Except even flooring it, it wouldn't go past (estimated) 95mph or so... it must have taken miles and miles to get it that fast - the 5.0 engine had torque like no other, but horsepower was something like 150 or so

Hearing you're in a Corsica brings me back. I drove a new '89 2.8L Corsica years ago and back then it was a heck of a car. It was quite fast and actually did surprisingly well with burnouts. It had plenty of pickup right up to 115 where the governor reminds you that it's not a sports car. Believe it or not it was neck and neck with the typical Camaros of the time, but not them 5.0's; I had a '69 Firebird for them.

Yeah, this car is pretty easy to speed in. I was tired one day and not paying attention and found myself flying down the city freeway, about 45km/h over the limit...I slowed down just in time when I saw the unmarked car with the cop and his tripod...really it was hard to notice without checking the speedometer because the road was so empty.
So later that day around the same area I saw a REALLY nice Porsche 911 with a younger driver, and challenged him to race...again, slowing down just before the cop, while he blasts by him at 160km/h in an 80 zone...can't imagine that guy was too happy...

Yeah, this car is pretty easy to speed in. Yes! On the rare occasions that I've had my 2001 4.0 into the 90 mph range, it felt just as good as that 1972 442 that I had owned previously, and that car had the W-25 455.

yes, marc, i agree...the Aurora feels almost as powerful as the 455. but the Aurora is definitely much, much "smoother" at those speeds

the 1970 W-30 442 only had 14" stock wheels with 265/70R14 tires . 300 hp but an amazing 500 ft-lb torque. the 442 could muster sub 15 sec. 100 mph in the 1/4 mile but topped out at 117. all of these are stock numbers

Post by Oldsnut on Jun 29, 2008 22:27:54 GMT -6
'70 W-30 had 370 HP rating. 300 HP in 1971 when the gov't changed the rating method.
I definitely feel safer going 117mph in my Aurora than my 442 but the raw power at launch on the 442 is something to experience, pure adrenalin BABY!

Don't worry, I won't tell my friends at the RPD you are coming...
