so i finally made it back out to Ann Arbor to get started on the fuel pump issue. to confirm it was the fuel pump, i disconnected it from the fuel filter and turned it on. it shot out maybe a foot at best. definitely not 41 psi! so i put that back together, empty the trunk, pop the access panel off and found what i thought was another brown cover. it was actually packed with damp sand, to where i could only see the AC logo on top of the pump! i didnt snap a pic of that, but thats crazy! it took me a half hour to dig it all out and vacuum it. this is whats left. now i know this happens. is it usually this bad? how do i get it out without breaking the tabs? because thats when i will need to either do the hillybilly fix (no offense boldsmobile) or replace the gas tank. i have no problem getting a new ring (where can i find them by the way?) i just want to get this old one out without any more problems...

Hey, I totally did the hillbilly fix before him! ;-)
But anyway, shop vac, patience. Just scrape at it for a bit, use brushes etc, get comfy in your trunk and prepare to spend some time there lol.
As far as ordering the retaining ring, I used Rockauto.com

Hey ! At least give me credit for machining a new ring and using stainless screws !! I didnt go the drywall scew method I only had half of one tab left. With any luck yours will hold up during ring removal. Tough to tell from the pics how much is left to them. Dont wish this failure on anyone. If you arent lucky you will have to make the same decision as me ..... big coin or $5. You just might be the next Hillbilly around here.

Do not knock the hillbilly ways. Most of the time it is a better fix then engineers could ever come up with. Of course we do not set in air conditioning making 150 - 200k a year to think crap up either.

I have no problem doing the fix if i have to. Im just hoping that the gas tank part holds up so i can just replace the retaining ring. from the looks of it, thats not going to happen. I dont even know where the ring and the tank separates...
i should have dad shoot it with PB and let it soak before i get back out there. sound like a good idea?

Soak it as much as you can.
For the ring, if you don't want to wait just go to the nearest caddy dealer. The ring is like $14 bucks. Even a chevy dealer might have it.

Thanks alec. This is the plan. Im going to have my dad shoot it with PB every day he can this week. then i will go out there next weekend and see what i get.
more questions. do i have to worry about sparks if i use a screwdriver and hammer to tap it out? will the plastic fuel lines be affected by PB? i know it likes to melt styrafoam so its worth a concern to me. will the new ring be more rust resistent (or proof)? otherwise I will treat it with something or paint it.

I have seen these videos before JT. this is how you would do it provided the ring is not rusted on and doesnt give you any trouble. once i get the ring off, i shouldnt have any problems.
