Not 10 minutes TEN FREAKIN MINUTES after i get back in the house tonite from hollowing out the cat (my stepdad and i were under the car under the jacks) (this thread aurorah.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=1stgen&action=display&thread=16694). I left the car on jackstands to finish up the job tomorrow. I was posting here on ACNA, talking to asimmons136 about his problems, similar to mine. Suddenly, I hear a huge screech, crash, vroom, screech, crash! I run outside, thinking utoh, my car fell off the jacks. Not quite. A drunk driver took the corner in front of my house (we live on the other side of a T intersection) and apparently side swiped my dads truck and then smashed into my baby, knocking it off the stands. She was trying to ram her car further forward and get away, but we stopped her. She could have backed out but was too drunk to think of it. She was in a Hyundai Sonnata... She couldnt even budge my car! (later laughed at that part). From what i can see, only very minor frame damage, mostly the plastic bumper. Her car was f-ed in more ways than one (starting with the washer fluid leaking under the car). Police towed her away, then gave the good news. Under current Michigan law, a car legally parked and damaged by another has to be fixed by the drivers insurance completely. Not a dime out of my pocket (not that I have any) thank heavens since i only have Liability coverage insurance. Im thankful that we had already wrapped up our project just in time. Neighbor took pix, my mom has our camera and shes at work. They are to come soon...

as an added note, the only apparent damage to the truck is a scraped bumper and a damaged front licence plate holder. he was parked backed in. I was parked front in.
Actually, this isnt the first time it happened. A few years back, a guy came too fast around that same corner and hit the back of his truck (back then he used to pull in like normal). messed his leaf spring and bed fender up. He claims the truck still isnt right since then. Not more than an hour earlier, us kids (even i was little back then) were playing around the cars in the driveway. Its actually quite scary when I think about it.

Dang, CB! Talk about bad luck... at least you were out from under the car when it happened though. It could've been a lot worse if you or your stepdad were working on it at the time. It's good that she has to fix it all too, but I guess its hard to dispute that your car was parked considering she knocked it off your stands!

Lets not mention the jackstands to the insurance company... Unless we find out they caused more damage to the underside. In that case, we were "still in the middle of the job, and just stepped in to take a break." Theres no dispute that it was parked though.
I cant wait to get these pix. Probably tomorrow. You guys wont believe how bad hers was in comparison to mine. I know Auroras can take a hit. But i didnt think one small corner that comprised of only the plastic bumper took on a full car. Im thinking her car may have already been damaged (and slowed down) by hitting the truck and thats why it got so smashed in comparison to mine. I really dont see how a plastic bumper could have prevented so much damage from the front of another car.

I really dont see how a plastic bumper could have prevented so much damage from the front of another car. Because all of the damage done is underneath the plastic cover. Check out my Aurora thread, very last one on page 2 in this topic. I went through a telephone poll and the bumper shows almost nothing. However everything inside was pushed back. On a side note, make sure your car is 100% when you get it back, and ANYthing that was wrong, even before the accident is fixed. You had a wheel bearing going, make sure there's a new one on there. If there was a 70mph vibration before, make sure it's gone now. Transmission shifted funny before, it better be flawless now....

too bad she didnt hit the other side, I could have gotten a new door and that rust spot cleared up. I think im gonna use this to clear up my engine issues (it runs really bad as per the other thread in the maintinence section).
Im gonna have my uncle come out and assess the damage. But I honestly dont think anything behind the bumper got hurt. Underneath, theres no metal stuff thats damaged. I didnt look inside the trunk (although i did ope it to get a flashlight and it opens fine) I even have my taillight. Although the red sidemarker is smashed and not working.

Ok so uncle looks at it (and so do i for the first time in the light) the whole back bumper is shifted to the drivers side and both bumper mounting brackets are busted. I will keep you all informed as the insurance companies start playing thier games...

Is there any way to put a huge rock(s) on your lawn, so that the next bad driver will hit the rock and not the house/car? Or at least be seriously slowed...

Im gonna have my uncle come out and assess the damage. Nothin' against your uncle... But get your car to a reputable body shop in the area for a complete inspection prior to settling on any repairs. The DUI lady's insurance company SHOULD be calling you to set all this up if they are halfway responsible, if not get your insurance company involved to grease the wheels. They will not charge you a dime or put any claim on your record if the other company is paying in full. It could be really difficult to justify having additional items fixed after the fact, so just get all your bases covered (as much as possible) to get it right the first time around.

well, my bumper is toast as expected, and so are the mounting brackets. that appears to be all, but I will surely give my company a call tomorrow (closed already today...) and make sure a pro body shop looks into it. Updates to come.

Ouch! That's one is a tough break! Using the ole' slide hammer on the truck? I answered your post in the "classic prices" thread. I am not sure not though. Do you have any daytime pics?

In the post with pix, I said I would snap a few pix of the damage in the daytime. give me a little bit, its my last week of high school ever, and I have finals to take care of.
we are not using any hammers on the truck. I thought that too at first, then i remember that the hand in the pic is actually mine. Thats actually me holding a flashlight in the right hand, and pulling out a chunk of her car with the other.
you guys really think this is a total? Looks like a new bumper and mounting brackets and I would be good as new!
now if your talking about daytime pix of the car itself, I have plenty of those ;D

IDK rear panel damage is a real pain for body shops. If your lucky they will be able to just pop the dent out by the tail lights. I know that when my moms old lumina slid and took out a sign post it dented by the tail lights and the guys at the body shop told us it would cost more to repair that one piece than the car was worth. that was 4 years ago and the lumina was a 98. It might be a total loss or it might not. There is almost always under lying damage also. So just hope for the best!
