I want to upgrade the in-dash radio/cd player in my 02. I have the bose package installed so am pretty happy with speakers etc but would really like to put in a multi-disc unit that maybe has a plug on the face for connecting an mp3 player.
I am most likely going to have it done at a shop for the install, to avoid the headache it looks like I would get taking the entire console apart. I want to pick out a decent quality unit that will fit into the same dash spot and look as if it might have always been there.
Any ideas/suggestions???

Just find a nice looking double din head unit. I would recommend Kenwood or Alpine.
It is a job you can easily do yourself. You need a wiring harness and an antenna adapter. As well as a dash install kit.

I know I probly "could" do it on my own... but every time I think that and get started, I end up wishin I had gone to someone...
I will look into it a bit more and think about it.
How much do I need to worry over the fit for knobs through the opening? most regular sized units will just slot in? except for needing the mount kit etc on the back, I mean... I am hoping for a near factory appearance since the wife will fuss and complain if I spend money on it and she thinks it is "messing up" the car

Thanks for the link... looks like it might not be TOO bad, but I may still get it done at a shop...for the above listed reasons (wives just don't understand that we WANT to do stuff ourselves)

it is very very very simple to take apart our dash in the 2nd gen almost too easy to be honest with you.
I have a link to a $10 cd harness for our cars but the antenna adapter is something ull have to buy yourself either online or at a local store as we need one for a VW I believe? or something of the sort its the european cars type antenna we need bose or non bose its the same way.
if you want the option to keep your steering wheel controls its $150+ for that harness so take it as you want.
I would go with a Double Din player if you want it to look near stock type looking anyways

Alright bro, I looked up some Metra model numbers for you. Metra is usually the company I rely on for dashkits etc. So here goes. (Click the part numbers I provided to go to website you can purchase from. You can always type the model number in google and find sources elsewhere.) I guess first you will need to dissassemble the console: 2nd Gen Console DissassemblyDouble Din Dash Kit:Metra 95-2009Aftermarket HU Wiring Harness Adapter:No Metra Number Available I coud Find.If you go to Metra website there are also HU wiring adapters to retain onstar etc. Antenna Adapter:Metra 40-VW10Even if you decide to take it an audio shop, you can purchase what you need online. That way you don't get shafted there. Prices can skyrocket in those places. Maybe this can be stickied. That way 2G owners know exactly what they need. The antenna alone is enough to throw you off.

there we go sall has the right one for all of it.
stickied this should be, keep in mind that harness will not allow the steering wheel controls to work (altho not proven as no1 has said otherwise so this is speculation until otherwise said )
keep in mind the deck may also do the steering wheel controls too for you even with that cheap harness

WOW, so much info and help... I was just expecting a few stereo name/model suggestions.
Once again, our community steps up and goes beyond the call. Thanks for all the time and research done. The links will really help as well, making me want to do the job solo... but we will see on that...

kinda on subject, i ordered new speakers for the doors, and rear deck. i guess i'm hearing installing an aftermarket unit is not recommended with the Onstar setup because alot of things run through the radio. i know Onstar is no longer functional in our cars, but i still wonder whether it is ok to get that adapter harness for it, or bypass the onstar thing altogether. Best Buy will do an install and says it's fine, Crutchfield, where i got the speakers, said not to. any input?

It shoul not matter. I am certain 2g owners have used this adapter with success.

it still gonna be fine, any audio shop would say the same.
crutchfield is basing it off that if the onstar still worked type thing

I am trying to hook up an Infinity bass link in my 01. I see the Bose amp in the back. Can I grab the front and rear speakers signal from one of the two plugs?
