OLDSMOBILE OFFERS COLLECTOR EDITIONS TO COMMEMORATE ITS 100-PLUS YEARS IN THE BUSINESS
Oldsmobile continues to find itself in an unprecedented position in the automobile industry. While it phases out its dealers from business it must continue to sustain its sales volume by delivering as many new cars, trucks and vans as possible, thereby contributing to keeping the plants running at capacity. Over time GM will gradually shift the mix of products built at these assembly plants. Happily, Olds had a very good year in 2001, nearly meeting its retail sales numbers from the previous year. Demand for these outstanding products continues. However, as the Olds dealers gradually close their doors over time, the sales volume will naturally decline.
As the industry's oldest existing nameplate, Olds has had a colorful, storied history that will long be remembered. After all, few nameplates have survived 105 years in what has always been a fiercely competitive automotive climate.
To commemorate its long, glorious history, Oldsmobile is producing Collector Editions for all brands with the last 500 vehicles that roll off the line. These vehicles have unique embroidery, wheels, ornamentation, color, and badging, as well as a special certificate for the owner. This line of limited-edition vehicles begins with production of the last 500 units of the Intrigue in June 2002.
The 105-year-old brand will cease production after the 2004 model year, but Oldsmobile remains loyal to its customers by backing them with a GM corporate guarantee. Oldsmobile says goodbye to the Intrigue and Aurora V6 models for the 2003 model year. The Aurora V8 will be discontinued for the 2004 model year and the remaining vehicles in the Oldsmobile lineup - Alero, Silhouette, and Bravada - will no longer be produced after the 2004 model year.
For the 2003 model year, there are a few product enhancements. All models offer new colors; the Alero adds XM Satellite Radio. Bravada offers a DVD Entertainment System, optional coil suspension on its all-wheel drive model and traction assist standard on the two-wheel drive model. The Silhouette has larger wheels and standard traction control on its two-wheel drive model.
