2001 Aurora Product Information A NEW FLAGSHIPWhen the Aurora debuted in 1994, it represented a new era for Oldsmobile – serving as a symbol of revitalization, of change. Now the Aurora, Oldsmobile’s flagship model, moves into its second generation, featuring an all-new exterior design and a long list of improvements. With two lighter, more efficient engines available, an improved chassis and a lighter, tighter body, the 2001 Aurora is a true road performer. It is now more responsive, more agile and more appealing to a younger, more sophisticated customer. There are more than 100,000 classic Auroras on the road, and the newly redesigned flagship is expected to dramatically boost current volume. The 2001 Aurora, introduced early in 2000, now has two additional features: the next-generation OnStar and rear shoulder belts.

Streamlined, Sophisticated InteriorMORE INTERIOR ROOMInside, the Aurora is quiet, uncluttered and refined. Though a smaller exterior, the new Aurora offers more head room in front and back and more shoulder and hip room than the original. The narrowed roof, A-pillars and lowered cowl improves outward visibility and gives the interior a more open, spacious feel. MORE USABLE TRUNKThe trunk also has been improved. While the 14.9-cubic feet trunk features a tad less volume, the wider trunk opening and lower liftover make it much easier to load and unload items, making the space more useful and practical. Aurora models have a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat. On V8 models a six-way passenger seat is included, front seats are heated, and the rear seat has a pass-through area for items such as skis and lumber. Steering wheel controls allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road. DRIVER INFORMATION CENTERA Driver Information Center (DIC) provides complete information about vehicle systems. With 27 warning messages, the DIC monitors functions including: fuel range and gallons used; average fuel economy; oil pressure; battery voltage; tire pressure; engine oil and transmission fluid life index; and date and elapsed time. SOFT TO THE TOUCHThe cabin uses luxurious soft-touch materials and genuine walnut veneer accents on the center console, door panels and venting areas. Standard leather trim appears throughout, as well as modest chrome highlights. Smooth, angled controls and black-faced gauges with white lettering complete the look.

Less is More ExteriorSLEEK & SOPHISTICATED DESIGNThe Aurora’s exterior has been completely redesigned. Its shape is still sleek and sophisticated, but it is now tighter, more muscular and six inches shorter. Designers adopted a “less is more” philosophy, adding no frivolous decoration such as cladding or tacked-on moldings to detract from its smooth, slim lines. The result is elegant, striking, and inviting. Overall, the design is intended to appeal to a broader audience. While all-new, the exterior remains true to Oldsmobile’s heritage, featuring long, slim horizontal headlamps, sleek wheel wells, muscular fenders and liquid crystal taillamps. REMINISCENT OF THE ORIGINALIn front, the Aurora has no grille – instead, designers sculpted lower intakes in the bumper that are reminiscent of the original Aurora. In the rear, a steep backlight and large, wrap-over taillamps minimize the horizontal length of the decklid. TIGHTER THAN THE ORIGINALThe Aurora has a 112.2-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 199.3 inches. That is 1.6 inches shorter wheelbase and 6 inches shorter overall than the original Aurora. The V8 version rides on P235/55 HR-17 tires and the V6 has P225/60 HR-16 tires.

Stiffer Structure and ChassisLIGHTER BODYStiffer Structure and Chassis The Aurora’s trimmer body and retuned suspension make it more agile, responsive and balanced. A new cast magnesium beam integrates the instrument panel and steering column solidly into the body structure. New lateral tie bars in the front end and shock towers integrated into the dash provide a stiffer front structure. The result: a significantly lighter body structure that offers peak mass distribution, strength and rigidity. Compared to the original Aurora, the 2001 Aurora’s mass has reduced by 165 lbs. in the 4.0L version, and by 285 lbs. in the 3.5L. RESPONSIVE STEERINGRedesigned front suspension geometry, combined with retuned bushings, greatly improve steering response and cornering capability. A combination of high spring rates and smaller-diameter stabilizer bars give more uniform response to steering inputs. Struts and shocks are tuned to dampen body roll. Lateral links control wheel alignment for stability under high cornering loads. The semi-trailing arm design virtually eliminates driving under hard braking. Lightweight aluminum front and rear control arms and knuckles minimize mass. SMOOTH ROAD FEELThe redesigned intermediate shaft connects the steering wheel to the steering gear, giving a more direct feel of the road while blocking harshness and vibration. An elastomeric material (santopreme) provides controlled isolation and is surrounded by tight-tolerance aluminum fittings. The gear itself is rigidly mounted to the front cradle at the left end to resist lateral compliance. One-piece side rings with integral quarters eliminate rear pillar seams and contribute to precise door fit and finish.

Two Powerful EnginesThe 2001 Aurora now has two available engines – an improved 4.0L DOHC V8, and the award-winning 3.5L DOHC V6. IMPROVED 4.0L V8The 4.0L has been completely redesigned for better fuel economy, better sound quality and lower emissions. It produces 250 horsepower at 5600 rpm, and torque tops out at 260 lb.-ft. at 4400 rpm, with 90 percent of peak torque on the ground between 2300 and 5600 rpm. New is a revolutionary low-friction valvetrain that dramatically reduces side loads and sliding friction, reducing engine wear and providing drivers with more fluid, efficient power. New pistons, combustion chambers and a reaction heated catalyst system help meet federal low-emission vehicle (LEV) standards. STATE-OF-THE-ART 3.5L V6The 3.5L is based on the 4.0L. It features a dual overhead cam, 24-valve design that offers state-of-the-art efficiency and performance. It has a long stroke design and the latest combustion technology to deliver high-end output and exceptional low-end torque. Power is rated at 215 horsepower at 5600 rpm, with peak torque of 234 lb.-ft. at 4400 rpm. With the exception of oil and filter changes, the engines have no scheduled service requirements for 100,000 miles. Both have Teflon crankshaft seals to prevent fluid leaks for more than 150,000 miles. The engines use a number of lightweight, low-friction components made from aluminum, magnesium and composite materials, and also share many design and manufacturing philosophies and processes. These include a 102mm bore-center dimension, 90-degree V-angle, a new roller-follower valvetrain and combustion chamber design. The 4.0L V8 is mated to a 4T80-E Hydra-matic transmission, which can handle higher torque and performance levels. The 3.5L has a 4T65 Hydra-matic electronic transmission. Both transmissions offer excellent shift character, smoothness and durability and require no fluid changes for the life of the vehicle.

Precision Control System
The most significant improvement to vehicle stability on the 2001 Aurora is traction control and the Precision Control System.
AVOID WHEEL SPIN & SLIPPAGE Traction control uses torque reduction and front brake application to avoid wheel spinning and slippage in adverse road conditions.
NO DRIVER INPUT REQUIRED Comprised of four major components, the PCS includes two wheel speed sensors monitoring wheel speed and direction, steering angle sensor, integrated yaw sensor and a hydraulic control unit that compares the turning angle of the car to the turning angle of the steering wheel. If the system detects a difference between the two inputs, the hydraulic control unit applies and adjusts either of the front brakes to bring the vehicle into align-ment with the needs of the driver. Fully automatic, the system requires no input from the driver and is designed to help drivers maintain control in the event of a driving emergency, including heavy braking or obstacle avoidance.
If the vehicle begins to skid or slide, the PCS measures lateral acceleration, individual wheel speeds, steering wheel angle and yaw rate. (Yaw is the rotary motion about a vertical axis through the vehicle’s center of gravity. A simple turn at a stoplight typically amounts to 90 degrees of yaw motion.) The PCS intervenes either by increasing or decreasing the level of braking power.
CORRECTS OVERSTEER In an oversteer condition, the vehicle rotates more than the driver commands and this could result in the rear of the vehicle becoming “loose” or sliding outward. Under this condition, the system will apply pressure to the outside front brake. This creates a counter yaw movement that will rotate the rear of the vehicle in the opposite direction of the spin.
... & UNDERSTEER Understeer conditions, or “pushing,” results when the front tires of the vehicle are not cornering as fast as the rear of the vehicle. In this case, the brake is applied to create a counter yaw movement on the front of the vehicle that allows it to pivot around the turn under better control.
The PCS system is enabled at all times and is transparent to the driver. When it intervenes to enhance control of the car, an indicator light on the instrument panel notifies the driver. It adds another degree of driving refine-ment most often associated with European marques. Traction control and PCS are standard on the V8 and optional on the V6.

Onstar
Onstar
VIRTUAL ADVISOR The 2001 Aurora will offer OnStar hardware as standard equipment – plus a free one-year premium service subscription as part of the vehicle purchase (U.S. and Canada only). The OnStar system in 2001 offers a myriad of new features, such as Virtual Advisor, through which OnStar subscribers can receive Web-based information such as stock prices or incoming e-mail via a special subscriber Web site. Subscribers create a personal profile on the Internet or through an OnStar Advisor and program the information they want to receive. With the hands-free, voice-activated interface, OnStar subscribers use voice prompts, such as “Start my e-mail,” or “Start my stock quotes,” to receive Internet services from Virtual Advisor. Virtual Advisor converts Internet text to speech and relays the data via synthesized voice to the driver.
Another new OnStar feature is personal calling. Subscribers can make hands-free phone calls using the voice recognition feature and the three-button system. Subscribers pay for their cellular minutes up-front, much like a pre-paid phone card. Cellular minutes are not included in the subscriber package.
Rear Shoulder Belt
Ever conscious of vehicle safety, the Aurora now has a rear shoulder belt for the center passenger. This addition ensures that every Aurora passenger is safe with a shoulder and lap belt.
