Last Thursday at 1am I nailed a deer on a freeway... just got the call from the insurance adjuster that they want to total it and give me $2650 (or $2400 if I keep it)... I paid $1200 at auction a couple years ago and replaced the radiator ($300)... I estimated private party bluebook at less than $2K due to rust and other mechanical issues so I'm ok with the price... but I love that car... I hit it going 60 just before taking an entrance ramp and you could see from the splatter that it went over the passenger side of the car. I didn't even feel the collision though... just saw something brown... noticed big bambi eyes.. heard a crunch... and then heard lots of cussing... didn't even find the deer that night so no venison Going back to the auction I got it at tomorrow to see what they have now... and scouring the interwebs for one in the $2K range (would like to pocket a little ) ... and now I have a nice parts car... unless someone has one with a good body/frame they'd like to sell?

Is it just the fender and that's over $2k in damage?

passenger quarter panel, hood, passenger headlight assembly, and some scratches on the bumper. I'm going to try to get a copy of the estimate today to see how much of it is mechanical stuff that I can fix myself... I just have no idea how to do body work.

Get the factory manual.....there should be some info there about doing the body work that's necessary here.

I've been driving a $1700 crunch for 10 years that looks worse than that.....
Fenders are cheap. Hoods not so, but with some sweat equity, you should be able to patch her up for less than 1/2 their estimate.

yeah, I already have the factory service manual because I had to fix the stalling issue and replace the radiator... I'm starting to think now is a good time to learn body work.

A saturday hobbyist could get that thing good to go for under $1000 I bet... $200 ir so for a boneyard fender.. Looks like the hood could get pounded close to straight then leveled with some body filler. New headlight for $100 or so.. Paint for the whole shebang could probably be had for under $300 from NAPA or CarQuest.
Find a buddy who shoots paint everyone has one! Toss him $100 (I'd help a pal out with a repair for that) and you'll be lookin good again!
EDIT: oops, just noticed how skewed the hood was actually.. maybe it wouldn't be fixable without pro-knowhow.. but if ya can score a boneyard fender I'm sure a hood could get scrounged up.

The hood is better off being replaced because of damage not in the photograph... the bumper took out the deers legs and its body landed on the hood on top of the radiator bracket... it's doesn't _look_ bad but it is very creased... the pictured dents are from the head and shoulders. However I've decided to rebuild the car and learn body work.... and do a webseries (maybe TV pilot) on me doing it... sort of a 'This Old House' for cars. I do independent film as a hobby and I guess now I have funding for a project right now I have to deal with the 'crazy flashing lights multifunction arm issue' it seemed to have picked up while at the insurance company's shop. I'm also heading to an auction (same one I bought the car at) to see if I can get another thing to drive while I tear the aurora apart.
