Ordered a new center console piece from ebay, could have simply asked what color it was but i decided to risk it and buy it anyway. Well...it was gray and my interior is natural, and I wasnt about to put it in and live with mis-matched pieces, nor was I going to send it back, so I did a little swapping. One quick look on the back side and I could see that the wood piece on top was plastic welded on to the main base, so out came the drill and some patience. After about 15 minutes of drilling I had all 13 holes drilled out. Once the top piece was out I carefully disassembled the remainder of the console and started drilling the old one. Once that was complete and torn down I took the cup holder piece that I had been missing from a console I got at the local pick n pull. After a good washing and a lot of scrubbing with a toothbrush I was ready to rebuild the base piece. Starting with the cup holder assembly I took all the springs, posts, and rubber fittings from the new console and put them on the old. Figured I may as well swap everything over since for one I paid for it and two the springs on mine were pretty rusty and sprung. After that was all put back together I put the shifter pieces on, glued the wood finish piece on with a hot glue gun and Viola! New old center console. New Console Back Side…theres 7 plastic welds on one side, 2 in the middle, and 4 on other side. Drill bit I used New console with wood top removed New console all disassembled Old console and the remainder of the new one Old console torn apart Junkyard console I used for the drivers side cup holder piece (I had to break it to get it out of the car) Post and spring that holds the cup holder assembly to the base (new on the left, old on the right) Old pieces…rusty hinges and dirty posts One side redone with new parts Both sides done More old parts New old console!

Great job on the refurbish!
When we talked about the gray color of the interior I was thinking med/dark gray, not the light gray that you picked up. Which interior colors got the light gray accents?

Thanks for the links to the color combo's! It's nice to see them side by side. Now it's very clear that the light gray would not work in your interior. Kudo's on the rebuild.

Excellent Job. Whomever initially designed the cupholder, along with the person who signed off on it from GM design, should have to run along with the drink of our choice in his hand for a week behind each of us Classic owners cars while we drive them. I'm still shaking my head. What were they thinking?? Bob

My LEAST FAVORITE part of the aurora haha, every time I get out of the car I seem to tap it and pop it open, SO annoying! I did something similar to this, except I got lucky and had the same color, direct swap haha. Nice work!

I can't understand why they decided to put the shifter lettering on the clear plastic piece instead of the black piece underneath. That lettering flakes off way too easily. I am going to take this one I have almost 100% intact to my friend who does vinyl decals to see if he can replicate it easily. This way the lettering will be good forever basically.

That sucks! My console has a crack in it that has become more noticeable over time. I would really like one of those new old stock consoles off of ebay, but I can't justify spending $300 on it, that's just too much, but that would be sooooo nice. Console is a big part of what I look at while sitting in the Aurora.

lol yeah. No thanks on $300. I could almost paint the entire vehicle for that or do two HID retros. The console I am repairing is for the '98. The '96 is mint besides a little paint... which I have now
